Discussion on Mahindra UDO with Suman Mishra, MD & CEO, Mahindra Last Mile Mobility

By Amit Jangra | Published Date : February 23, 2026

Mahindra UDO brings a premium touch to electric 3 wheelers, focusing on driver dignity, comfort, long range, and lower total ownership cost.

In a special interaction, Suman Mishra, Managing Director and CEO of Mahindra Last Mile Mobility, spoke about the idea behind the Mahindra UDO. For many years, three-wheelers across the world have looked almost the same. But customer needs have changed, roads have changed and even dreams of drivers have changed. That is where UDO comes in.

Mahindra felt that auto drivers don’t just want a vehicle for survival, they want respect and dignity. With UDO, the company is trying to create a new category in electric 3 wheelers — something premium but still practical. It is built on a monocoque platform and offers a real-world range of around 200 km, which is quite strong for daily city use.

Suman Mishra shared that many drivers feel shy about the old design of traditional autos. Some even park their vehicle a little away from their relatives’ homes. That clearly shows there was a gap in “design dignity.”

UDO’s modern look, sometimes described as an autoplane style, is not just about style. It is about pride. Drivers want to carry their families in a vehicle they feel good about. Just like today nobody wants a basic old phone if they can afford a smartphone, in the same way drivers also don’t want to drive a very basic vehicle if they have a better option.

Mahindra 3 wheelers have always been strong in the market, but with UDO, the company is trying to change the thinking around passenger autos completely.

Lower Running Cost, Higher Savings

One big highlight is the free service up to 1 lakh kilometres. This covers labour and even lubricants. Service interval is 25,000 km, which is much higher than normal autos. Being electric, the running cost is also lower than ICE autos.

According to Mishra, over five years, a driver can save up to Rs 6 lakh compared to a traditional ICE auto. That is a big number for someone in this business. Even though the price is on the higher side of the L5 segment, the total cost of ownership makes it a smart investment. A 6-year warranty also gives confidence.

Premium Feel Without Heavy Maintenance

Some people worry that premium design means costly spare parts. But Mahindra and Mahindra has ensured that spare parts are competitively priced as per market standards. Parts were even supplied to dealers before launch, so there is no shortage.

The body may look advanced, but it uses sheet metal with modular panels. So in case of damage, only the affected panel needs to be changed, not the full body.

In the end, UDO is not just another electric 3 wheeler. It is about space, comfort, reverse throttle, creep mode and a better experience for both driver and passenger. And maybe when a regular auto driver sees UDO on the road, he will think — “I was missing this all these years.”
