Green Revolution in Transport: First Electric Superlink Truck

By Mahender Singh | Published Date : August 28, 2025

The world’s first electric superlink truck has been launched, marking a major shift towards cleaner and more efficient logistics.

The first electric Superlink truck is here. It’s a huge deal for the trucking world. This truck can carry heavy loads long distances without burning diesel. That means less pollution and quieter roads.

In a big step toward greener transport, DHL has joined hands with Unilever and Volvo to introduce Africa’s first electric Superlink truck. This is not your regular delivery truck. It’s a fully electric, high-capacity vehicle, designed by Volvo, built to handle long routes without burning fuel. The truck can travel up to five hundred kilometers on one full charge, a major shift from traditional diesel-powered freight vehicles. Unilever is putting the truck to work in its supply chain, using it to move goods more cleanly and efficiently.

What Is a Superlink Truck?

Simply put, it’s a big truck with two trailers attached. These are used for hauling lots of stuff across long distances. Usually, they run on diesel engines. Unilever, which has been pushing for greener supply chain practices, sees this as a practical way to move closer to its climate goals. Volvo, on the other hand, aims to lead the electric shift in commercial transport.

How was interlinking done In This Truck?

This truck has been built through a well-planned combination of advanced components. The truck setup is quite something. It uses a fully electric Volvo FMX 6x4 tractor unit, paired with an eighteen-meter curtain-sided Superlink trailer. Together, they form a strong, heavy-duty electric vehicle, made to handle long routes and heavy loads, but without the smoke and noise that comes from diesel engines.

But this launch isn’t just about the vehicle. This is not just about rolling out a new truck. It’s also a chance to find out how well electric trucks do in the real world — like, can they handle long trips, are they actually better for the environment, and do they end up saving money or not? All this is being tried out at a time when Africa’s still figuring out its charging setup, so yeah, it’s a bold move, but maybe just the right time to try it.

Electric Power Changes Everything

This new truck runs on batteries. It can go about 500 kilometers on a single charge. That’s pretty good for such a heavy vehicle. The electric motors give it enough power to haul big loads easily.

Eco-friendly Vehicle Option

Because it doesn’t use diesel, it creates much less pollution, about 80% less than regular trucks. It’s also much quieter. Over time, truck owners can save on fuel and repairs. Many experts think this electric truck could change how goods move. Some companies want to add these trucks to their fleets soon.

Requirement Of Charging Stations

The main challenge now is making charging stations available on highways. Without good stations, trucks can’t travel far. Governments and businesses are working on this. This new electric Superlink truck is a big step toward cleaner transport. Hopefully, more electric trucks will be on the roads soon.

Frequently Asked Questions on Electric Trucks

Q1. Are electric trucks available in India?

Ans: Yes, several companies like Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, and Eicher have launched or are testing electric trucks, mostly for short-distance cargo and urban delivery.

Q2. What is the typical range of an electric truck?

Ans: Most electric trucks in India currently offer a range of 100–250 km per charge, depending on the model and load.

Q3. How long does it take to charge an electric truck?

Ans: Charging time varies by battery size and charger type. Fast charging can take 1–2 hours, while regular charging may take 6–8 hours.

Q4. Are electric trucks more expensive than diesel trucks?
