August 2025 sees steady CV sales with festive demand boosting trucks, pickups, and buses.
India’s commercial vehicle (CV) market closed in August 2025 with mixed signals. As per data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), total retail sales touched 75,592 units. This was an 8.56% rise compared to August last year, showing steady annual growth. At the same time, sales slipped a modest 1.11% from July 2025, as many buyers chose to hold back and wait for the benefits of GST 2.0, which began rolling out in September.

Dealers across the country reported that the festive spirit around Onam and Ganesh Chaturthi kept enquiries and bookings strong. Customers wanted to align deliveries with auspicious dates. But at the same time, many transport operators preferred to delay billing to save under the new tax structure.
FADA President C. S. Vigneshwar noted that demand was healthy overall, backed by e-commerce contracts and fleet replacement, but some hesitation was visible in the last week of the month. With the rains subsiding and more festivals coming up, confidence for September sales remains high.
How Different Brands Performed
The sales trend in August highlighted contrasting performances among leading truck and bus makers:
- Tata Motors retained the top spot with 24,271 units, but its numbers were down -2.64% YoY, as rural demand softened and replacement buying slowed.
- Mahindra & Mahindra reported 21,431 units, a solid 16.10% jump, thanks to its stronghold in the light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment.
- Ashok Leyland delivered 14,305 units, growing 18.48% YoY, supported by both heavy trucks and passenger buses.
- VE Commercial Vehicles (Volvo–Eicher JV) clocked 6,602 units, up 4.86%, aided by healthy traction in medium and heavy-duty trucks.
- Maruti Suzuki sold 3,790 units, a 9.80% increase, keeping its foothold in the mini truck and small carrier space.
- Force Motors posted 1,765 units, growing 23.95% YoY, with demand rising in rural and semi-urban passenger CVs.
- Daimler India (BharatBenz) recorded 1,458 units, slipping -2.41%, as premium fleet purchases stayed muted.
- SML Isuzu registered 1,177 units, growing 15.62%, driven by interest in its light and intermediate trucks.
- Smaller OEMs under the “Others” category added 793 units, a sharp 61.18% growth, showing increasing competition in niche CV markets.
Final Discussion
Industry experts say the small dip in August is only a temporary pause. With infrastructure projects picking up pace and the festive season boosting freight and passenger movement, momentum is expected to return quickly. Dealers are also betting on GST 2.0 benefits to encourage faster conversions from enquiries to deliveries.
Commercial vehicles — whether trucks, pickups, or buses — continue to be the backbone of India’s transport sector. The August numbers show resilience, and with September set to bring fresh momentum, the CV industry is gearing up for a stronger close to the year.
