FADA reports 1,78,697 CV and 3-wheeler units sold in August 2025. Sales dipped slightly, but festive demand and fleet upgrades kept market sentiment positive.
August 2025 turned out to be a fairly busy month for India’s transport market. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) shared that retail sales of commercial vehicles — trucks, pickups, buses — along with 3-wheelers reached 1,78,697 units. Compared to last year, the industry moved ahead, though numbers slipped a little from July. Many customers held back purchases, waiting to see what benefits GST 2.0 might bring in September.

Dealers pointed out that festivals like Onam and Ganesh Chaturthi helped keep the market lively. Transporters and fleet operators often prefer to take deliveries on festive or auspicious dates, and that trend continued.
Buyers weren’t chasing anything fancy — they mainly wanted machines that could stretch fuel, stay easy on upkeep, and handle the rough use of everyday operations.
According to FADA President C. S. Vigneshwar, “August brought strong enquiries and bookings. Some buyers waited for clarity on GST, but overall demand stayed healthy.”
How Brands Performed
- Tata Motors stayed on top in trucks and buses, though rural demand wasn’t as strong.
- Mahindra and Mahindra did well with pickups and light CVs, especially in urban and semi-urban areas.
- Ashok Leyland is stable in their position due to steady demand for heavy trucks and passenger buses.
- VE Commercial Vehicles continue to get consistent orders for medium and heavy-duty trucks.
- 3-wheeler makers like Bajaj and Piaggio enjoyed good traction as demand for local transport solutions rose.
Smaller players grouped under the “Others” category also managed to make gains, especially with mini trucks and compact 3-wheelers finding more buyers.
What’s Driving Sales
- Festivals: Deliveries linked with auspicious days.
- Fleet upgrades: Old vehicles being replaced with new models.
- Logistics & infra projects: Growth of e-commerce and highways boosting demand.
- Tier-2 & semi-urban growth: Dependence on 3-wheelers and LCVs for everyday transport.
What Lies Ahead
Dealers feel the slight slowdown in August won’t last long. As the festive season approaches, with GST updates expected and new infrastructure projects in the pipeline, sales of trucks, buses, pickups, and 3-wheelers are set to pick up momentum in September. Industry experts say the small dip in August is only a temporary pause. With infrastructure projects picking up pace and the festive season boosting freight and passenger movement, momentum is expected to return quickly.
