FADA Report: CV Retail Sales Reach 170,990 Units in September 2025

By Amit Jangra | Published Date : October 08, 2025

India's CV sales rose in September 2025, while three-wheeler sales dipped, reflecting mixed trends in the commercial transport sector.

The latest numbers from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) are in and they show a mixed bag for India’s commercial vehicle (CV) and three-wheeler segments this September.

Retail sales for both categories reached 170,990 units last month, slightly below the 176,788 sold during the same time last year — that’s a 3.28% drop overall.

Even though the total figure dipped, the commercial vehicle segment saw a bit of growth, with 72,124 units sold — up about 2.66% from last year’s 70,254.

Let’s break that down:

  • Sales of LCVs, commonly used for short-distance deliveries, were up a bit — roughly 44,392 units, which is a 6% increase year-over-year.
  • Medium Commercial Vehicles (MCVs) outpaced the rest, growing by 11.65%, with 6,257 units sold.
  • Meanwhile, Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HCVs) didn’t fare as well — sales dipped 5.66%, landing at 21,410 units.
  • As for specialized CVs like construction vehicles, the segment shrank drastically — just 65 units sold versus 87 last year, a 25% decline.

Three-Wheeler Market Slows Down, But Not All Bad News

Now coming to the three-wheeler space — overall, sales slid by 7.2%, down to 98,866 units from 106,534 the year before.

Here’s where it gets interesting:

  • Passenger E-rickshaws took a big hit, dropping 22.6% to 34,083 units. That's a pretty noticeable fall.
  • On the flip side, Goods E-rickshaws did quite well — up 31.97%, with 6,031 units sold. Seems like urban delivery demand is still going strong.
  • Goods 3-wheelers also saw a small bump, up 4.97% with 9,569 units.
  • Passenger 3-wheelers stayed more or less the same — a tiny 0.67% rise.
  • A small segment, personal-use 3-wheelers, jumped 58.6%, though it only accounts for 138 units.

What’s the Takeaway?

If we zoom out, the CV market seems to be holding its own, especially with light and medium trucks getting a boost — likely driven by e-commerce and intra-city logistics. But three-wheeler passenger vehicles, particularly e-rickshaws, appear to be losing steam.

It’s unclear whether this slowdown is due to financing issues, saturation, or changing commuter habits — maybe a bit of all three.

Worth Noting

These figures reflect actual retail sales, not factory dispatches, based on data from 1,392 of the 1,458 RTOs — minus Telangana. This ground-level snapshot, compiled with help from the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, gives a clearer picture of what’s really happening in the market.

Looking Ahead

With the festive season underway, automakers will be watching closely. Sales usually pick up around Diwali, so the next couple of months will be crucial — especially for three-wheeler makers looking to bounce back.
