Tata Power Partners with VECV to Drive Electric Commercial Mobility in India

Tata Power and VECV partner to boost electric commercial vehicle adoption, starting with Eicher Pro X trucks designed for urban deliveries.
Tata Power and VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV) have kicked off a new partnership aimed at helping more Indian businesses switch to electric commercial vehicles. Their main goal? Make the transition easier for truck and bus operators who are worried about things like charging access and operating costs.
Right now, they’re focusing on the Eicher Pro X, basically a set of smaller electric trucks meant for quick, local runs. They make a lot of sense in busy city traffic. There's been chatter about expanding to bigger vehicles later on, but that's not set in stone yet.

A lot of fleet owners are interested in going electric but many are holding back. And it usually comes down to the same three things:
- Not enough charging stations
- High battery costs
- Concerns about how far the vehicle can go on a single charge
That’s where Tata Power’s EV Charging Solutions team comes in. They’ve already built up a solid network, with more than 150,000 home chargers, over 5,500 public chargers and 1,200+ dedicated to buses spread across 600+ Indian cities.
The plan is to place even more chargers in places that make sense: transport hubs, freight depots and along major trucking routes. That way, commercial EV users won’t need to worry about where to plug in.
EVs Still Cost More Upfront — For Now
For larger trucks especially, the battery is the most expensive part. That’s a big reason why the partnership is starting small literally. Light-duty trucks and vans need smaller batteries and they’re cheaper to run in stop-start city traffic.
Yes, electric commercial vehicles cost more initially. But they tend to save money in the long run especially on fuel and maintenance. Tata Power and VECV are working to help fleet operators understand how those savings add up over time.
Meet the Companies Behind the Push
VECV, a joint venture between India’s Eicher Motors and Sweden’s Volvo Group — has been around since 2008. It started out building trucks and buses for the Indian market and now sells in about 40 countries. These days, it manufactures both Eicher and Volvo-branded vehicles, depending on the segment.
Tata Power's been involved in clean energy for quite a while now. Roughly 43% of what it produces comes from renewable sources like solar and wind. Lately, the company’s been putting a lot of effort into expanding its EV charging network — something that fits right in with India’s bigger shift toward cleaner transportation.
What's Next?
Tata Power will continue adding new charging points in areas where commercial vehicles operate. Both companies will also reach out to current Eicher customers to support their move to electric fleets.
Right now, the focus is on small commercial vehicles. But as battery prices drop and infrastructure grows, this model could expand to support larger trucks and buses too.
