Electric double-decker buses are being tested as the city plans to bring back high-capacity public transport in a cleaner form.
Now, Switch Mobility has decided to conduct road testing of electric double-decker buses. Later, they were stopped. Now MTC wants to start them again, but only in electric form. Switch Mobility is part of the Ashok Leyland group. It works only in electric vehicles. The company is now testing these buses on normal city roads.

A senior MTC official said that the plan is to reintroduce double-decker buses. Since electric buses are already running, MTC does not want diesel buses anymore.
The official said electric buses are working well. Because of this, double-decker buses will also be electric. This will help in carrying more passengers without adding more buses on the road.
More passengers in one bus means less crowd and better travel for people.
Around 20 Electric Buses in Pilot Project
MTC is planning to buy around 20 electric double-decker buses in the beginning. This will be a pilot project. The main aim is to see how these buses perform on city roads.
Right now, this is only a plan. The official also said that tenders have not been released yet. First, the testing will be completed. After that, MTC will take the next step. The pilot will help MTC understand daily operation issues.
Testing on Real City Roads
The buses are being tested on real city routes. This includes traffic roads, signals, turns, and busy areas. Testing on real roads is important before starting full service.
During testing, many things are checked. These include bus height, turning, braking, battery performance, and charging needs.
Passenger comfort and safety are also being observed. This testing will help avoid problems later.
OHM Global Mobility Handling Operations
OHM Global Mobility is operating electric buses for MTC. This company is also a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland buses. It already manages electric buses running in the city.
The buses are operated under a gross cost contract model. In this system, the operator runs and maintains the buses. MTC pays a fixed amount and manages routes and passengers. This model is already being used for electric buses.
Electric Buses Seen as Future Option
MTC is slowly moving towards electric buses only. Electric buses are eco-friendly vehicle options as these buses emit low carbon emissions. After getting success of this pilot project, more electric double-decker buses will be available on the roads. Passengers may get better space and smoother travel in the coming years.
