Shailesh Chandra Named MD & CEO of Tata Motors as P B Balaji Transitions to JLR
By Amit Jangra | Published Date : October 01, 2025
Shailesh Chandra becomes Tata Motors CEO from October 2025 as the company restructures electric, passenger and commercial vehicle divisions.
Starting October 1, 2025, Shailesh Chandra will take over as the new MD & CEO of Tata Motors Ltd. The appointment, confirmed by the board, will see Chandra serve a three-year term. He’ll also continue to lead the company’s electric vehicle arm, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM).
This change comes as P B Balaji, the current Group CEO, steps down to take over the reins of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in the UK. He’ll begin his new role at JLR on the same day.
This leadership shuffle is part of a broader plan by Tata Motors to split and sharpen focus on its core businesses — especially passenger vehicles, electric trucks and EVs and commercial vehicles.

Tata Motors has decided to separate its operations into two main business units:
- Commercial Vehicles (CV): This will include trucks, buses and investments in logistics and tech for heavy vehicles.
- Passenger and Electric Vehicles: This includes the PV business, EVs and JLR operations.
As part of this structure:
- Girish Wagh will become MD & CEO of TML Commercial Vehicles Ltd, the new CV-focused company.
- Sudha Krishnan joins as an independent director for five years.
- Kosaraju Veerayya Chowdary and Guenter Karl Butschek will also join the board of the CV unit.
- Hanne Sorensen will remain on the JLR board.
All these changes go live on October 1.
Who is Shailesh Chandra?
Chandra has been with Tata Motors since 2016, where he first worked in Corporate Strategy. He later moved on to head the Electric Mobility Business, where he helped grow Tata’s EV market share significantly.
Before that, he was with Tata Sons, involved in high-level group strategy. He’s also held roles in international companies like Tata Motors Design Tech Centre (UK) and Trilix (Italy).
He studied mechanical engineering at Banaras Hindu University and later completed an Executive MBA from SP Jain Institute of Management and Research.
Chandra has been closely involved in shaping Tata’s electric future — not just with EVs, but also pushing innovation in areas like battery technology and electric trucks.
What This Means for Tata Motors
With Chandra stepping in and Balaji moving to JLR, Tata Motors is preparing for long-term growth. By dividing the business into two focused units, the company hopes to move faster — especially in EV innovation and the commercial vehicle market.
Electric trucks, green transport and digital transformation are expected to be the key focus areas going forward. This leadership transition marks an important step toward making Tata Motors more agile and competitive — both in India and globally.
