The biggest support came from the passenger vehicle category. Sales in this segment increased strongly and crossed 1,900 units during May. Industry observers believe improving travel activity and replacement demand helped boost volumes.

A dealer associated with commercial vehicles said many fleet operators have recently shown interest in adding new vehicles for passenger movement. In several cities, demand for buses and passenger carriers remained healthier than cargo transportation demand.

Within the company's own business, passenger vehicle sales recorded much faster growth than cargo vehicles. This trend was also visible across different markets where customer enquiries remained stronger for passenger applications.

The cargo segment did not witness the same level of growth. Sales remained almost unchanged compared with last year. Many operators involved in freight transportation say business conditions have become slightly challenging because operating costs remain high.

Several fleet owners explained that fuel expenses and raw material costs continue putting pressure on earnings. Because of this, some buyers are delaying expansion plans for their trucks fleet until business conditions improve further.

Despite these challenges, standalone Mahindra trucks sales still managed to register growth during the month. Industry people believe demand for cargo transportation has not disappeared, but operators are becoming more careful while making new purchases.

SML Mahindra also contributed to the overall sales numbers. Passenger vehicle sales improved during the month, but cargo vehicle volumes declined compared with the previous year. Some dealers dealing with SML trucks said customer buying behaviour currently varies from region to region. In a few markets, passenger transport demand remains stronger, while freight operators continue monitoring expenses before investing in additional vehicles.
