Kiira Motors Electric Bus Finishes Historic Africa Tour

By Jony Shekhawat | Published Date : January 08, 2026

Kiira Motors received good interest from transport operators.

Kiira Motors has finished a long and tough road journey with its electric bus. The bus trip started in November and covered more than 13,700 kilometres across 6 African countries. In 39 days of journey, this electric bus travelled from Uganda to Cape Town and back.

This journey showed that electric buses can handle long routes, different weather and cross-border travel in Africa.

The expedition used the Kayoola Electric Coach 13M, built by Kiira Motors. It is an electric intercity bus designed in Africa for public transport use. Some technology parts came from China, but the bus itself was developed to support cleaner transport needs. Like electric buses used in cities today, this coach was built for long-distance routes between towns and countries.

Charging Was a Big Challenge on the Route

Most daily routes were under 500 kilometres, which is normal for buses and school buses in many regions. But for this long trip, charging was not always easy. Because charging stations are still limited, mobile charging units were used at some points. This showed that electric buses can work across Africa, but better charging infrastructure is still needed.

Strong Performance During the Full Journey

During the tour, the electric bus used about 0.79 kWh per kilometre. On average, it covered around 390 kilometres per day. Across the full 13,700 km, there was only one safety issue, which shows the bus systems worked well. For long trips like this, even diesel buses face problems, so this result was seen as very strong.

Kiira Motors Receives Strong Market Interest

The main aim of this tour was to verify electric mobility across African borders. During the journey time, Kiira Motors received more than 400 enquiries and pre-orders. Cities, institutions, and transport operators showed interest. This includes operators who currently use diesel buses, 30-seater buses, and even brands similar to Tata buses and Eicher buses, but now want electric options.

Leaders Say Electric Mobility Is Already Here

Elias Bwambale from Kiira Motors said that covering over 13,000 km across different climates and roads with only one incident proves the system works well.

Uganda’s Transport Minister Edward Katumba Wamala said this journey shows Africa can build and use its own solutions. According to him, electric mobility is no longer a future idea. It is already happening, and Uganda has taken a strong lead.
