VinFast is talking with State Transport Undertakings (STUs) in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. These STUs run most of the city buses and are now looking to switch to cleaner, more eco-friendly vehicles. According to VinFast Asia CEO Pham Sanh Chau, electric buses will help replace diesel buses and make city air better. He also said that the first VinFast electric buses should reach India by August 2026. The company is trying to confirm orders early so everything is ready when the buses start running.
Electric Bus Lineup with Up to 260 km Range
VinFast's electric bus models come in sizes between 6 meters and 12 meters. These electric buses are already running in Vietnam and were recently introduced in Europe. The company claims these buses can travel up to 260 km on a single charge because they use a large 281 kWh battery. This long range can help city routes, airport routes, staff buses, and some school buses operations without needing frequent charging. With India’s cities looking for better and cleaner public transport options, VinFast hopes its buses can offer a good match.
India’s EV Push Creating Big Demand for Electric Buses
Government support for electric buses in India has been strong in recent years. Programs like PM E-bus Sewa and PM E-Drive provide big financial backing to STUs. The PM E-Drive scheme, started in October 2024 with a budget of ₹10,900 crore, has set aside ₹4,391 crore just for electric buses in urban public transport. Because of these policies, India’s electric bus share is expected to reach 20–30% by the end of this decade. Recently, CESL opened India’s largest electric bus tender of 10,900 buses, which shows how fast this segment is growing.
Local Manufacturing May Come Later
Chau said the company has not yet finalised any plan for making electric buses in India, but VinFast will look at 100% localisation in the future. Some time ago, VinFast built a factory in Thoothukudi city of Tamil Nadu. VinFast invested around $500 million in this factory. Every year, VinFast get 50,000 electric cars from this plant. However, production can be increased up to 150,000 units. In case of increased demand for electric buses, VinFast can easily fulfill the demand of these green buses.
Strong Competition Already in the Market
VinFast will face strong competition because several brands already lead the electric bus segment in India. Ashok Leyland’s Switch Mobility, Tata Motors, Olectra Greentech, PMI Mobility and JBM Auto are moving quickly with their own electric bus models. These companies supply buses for city transport, airport shuttle, staff buses and some school buses. With the market growing fast, VinFast is entering at the right time, but it will need strong pricing, local support and a good service network to compete with these established players.
Conclusion
VinFast’s plan to bring electric buses to India by August 2026 shows how serious the company is about becoming a major player in the country’s EV market. With government support rising and STUs demanding clean and reliable buses, the arrival of a new global brand will bring more choice and faster EV adoption in India.
