Truck sales in India rose 2% in the first half of FY2025, driven by strong demand for light and medium commercial vehicles (LCVs and MCVs).
In the first half of the 2025 financial year, India’s truck market posted a small but steady rise. FADA’s latest numbers show sales reached 4,63,695 units between April and September, compared to roughly 4,54,000 units a year earlier — a 2% improvement overall.

Most of the growth actually came from Light Commercial Vehicles, or LCVs and Medium Commercial Vehicles (MCVs). According to experts, these types of trucks are getting more popular, especially for moving goods within cities and for short trips.
According to Anurag Singh, Advisor at Primus Partners, “The need for smaller and medium trucks inside cities keeps going up. It’s a sign that business activities are getting stronger.”
So even though total growth was just 2%, LCVs and MCVs helped balance the market and kept sales positive. The interest in electric trucks and fuel-efficient vehicles is also slowly increasing, especially in urban regions.
HCV Segment Slows Down
On the other hand, the Heavy Commercial Vehicle (HCV) segment faced a slowdown. Experts say this happened because better roads, faster toll systems and improved fleet use have reduced the need for new big trucks.
Anurag Singh explained, “The trucks on the road now run longer distances in less time. So, companies don’t have to replace them as quickly as before.”
Mixed Monthly Performance
The FADA data reveals a few fluctuations. Sales jumped by 8.2% in January 2025 but then dipped by 3.7% in May. Experts say the drop happened because dealers had too many trucks in stock and fleet owners weren’t replacing vehicles as much.
Market Outlook Looks Better
Despite small challenges, the market’s outlook stays positive. Good monsoon rains, more infrastructure projects and steady GST rates are expected to help all truck categories grow in the coming months.
The credit rating agency ICRA expects commercial vehicle sales to rise by 3–5% in FY2026.
Forecast for key segments:
- Bus sales may grow 8–10%
- LCV trucks could rise 3–5%
- Medium and Heavy trucks (M&HCV) might see a small 0–3% growth
The Road Ahead
India’s truck market is moving slowly but steadily. The growing demand for LCVs, MCVs and even electric trucks is helping the sector gain speed again. With more construction, mining and delivery work across the country, the future looks promising for truck manufacturers and transport businesses.
