JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal said the company wants to learn from China's progress in electric vehicles and battery technology before developing more advanced technologies of its own.

Jindal said JSW wants to first match technologies that are already proven in China, which is one of the world's largest electric vehicle markets. The next step will be to develop new technologies through its own research and engineering teams in India.
JSW is building its automotive portfolio through businesses including JSW Motors and JSW Greentech. The group has committed up to $3 billion, or around ₹25,000 crore, over five years through its automotive arm to build a wider electric mobility ecosystem.
Jindal also said that JSW will have its own R&D setup for trucks and buses, along with its passenger vehicle business.

Ampstar Development Gets Strong R&D Focus
JSW Greentech has already launched the Ampstar electric commercial vehicle brand. The company is putting engineering and R&D at the centre of the business.
According to the report, 88 of JSW Greentech's first 100 employees were hired for research and development. The company has developed its vehicle-control unit, source code, battery-pack design and vehicle architecture in India.
JSW Greentech is also working with global suppliers such as ZF and Dana for mechanical systems, while international specialists have been involved in truck-cabin and bus design.
The development of Ampstar is expected to give JSW more control over its core vehicle technology as the company expands its commercial vehicle portfolio.
Focus on Batteries and Local Technology
Battery technology is another major part of JSW's automotive strategy. JSW Greentech will initially import battery cells and carry out cell-to-pack assembly at its manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
Another JSW Group business is working on battery-cell technology, including lithium-ion and sodium-ion chemistries. Jindal has highlighted the importance of developing domestic battery-cell capabilities as electric mobility grows.
The company is therefore looking at the complete electric mobility ecosystem, from batteries and vehicle architecture to software and charging infrastructure.
JSW Trucks and Buses to Get In-House Technology
The group's plans include developing technology for both JSW trucks and electric buses. The focus is not only on assembling vehicles but also on developing core systems and intellectual property in India.
JSW Greentech's 12-metre electric bus has already received CMVR Type Approval from ARAI, supporting its planned commercial rollout.
