JSW is investing around ₹2,500 crore in the first phase of its electric commercial vehicle venture. The company is developing a 90-acre manufacturing facility at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra.
The plant will have an annual capacity of 15,000 vehicles, including 10,000 electric buses and 5,000 electric trucks.
JSW's Ampstar brand will be used for its electric commercial vehicle products. The company is planning to start with heavy-duty electric vehicles and gradually expand into other categories.

JSW Targets 100,000 Electric Trucks by 2030
Jindal said JSW is looking beyond the initial manufacturing capacity and believes the Indian market can support a capacity of 100,000 electric trucks by 2030. The company plans to build scale rather than focus on reaching break-even in the initial years.
The commercial vehicle portfolio will initially start with 55-tonne electric tractor-trailers. The company plans to later add tippers, fixed-body trucks, dumpers and smaller vehicles.
JSW's entry into the trucks and buses market comes through electric mobility, allowing it to develop new vehicle platforms around electric powertrains.
Focus on Closed-Loop Truck Operations
JSW has an existing operating base that can support the initial deployment of its electric vehicles. Its steel, cement and port businesses are served by around 17,000 trucks.
Many of these vehicles operate on predictable closed-loop routes. Such operations can support dedicated charging or battery-swapping infrastructure and provide JSW with an opportunity to deploy electric vehicles within its own ecosystem.
The company also plans to offer customers financing, charging, maintenance, wet leases, cost-per-kilometre contracts and battery-as-a-service.
Electric Bus and Truck Portfolio to Expand
Along with electric trucks, JSW is developing an electric bus range covering vehicles from 7 metres to 18 metres. The company is also investing in vehicle architecture, software, battery-pack design and research capabilities.
According to the report, 88 of JSW Greentech's first 100 employees were hired for research and development. The company is therefore building its own technical capabilities alongside manufacturing capacity.
With its Ampstar brand, new manufacturing facility and long-term investment plans, JSW is preparing to expand across the electric commercial vehicle segment in India.
