The Hinduja Group has announced a fresh investment of Rs 2,500 crore in Tamil Nadu, with a major focus on accelerating electric mobility, battery charging infrastructure and clean energy solutions. This is a group that already has deep roots in the state through its commercial vehicle business, so the move reads less like an entry into a new market and more like doubling down on one it already knows well.

3. Why Tamil Nadu Keeps Getting This Kind of Investment

Under a Memorandum of Understanding signed with Guidance Tamil Nadu, the conglomerate's e-mobility arm, OHM Global Mobility, will operationalise electric buses for public transport across the state while scaling its broader mobility ecosystem. The investment also stretches into battery charging networks, digital mobility services and automotive engineering — so this isn't just about putting more buses on the road, it's about building the surrounding infrastructure those buses actually need to run reliably.

The Renewable Energy Piece Behind It

To power its expanding clean mobility network, Hinduja Renewables will develop over 200 MW of solar, wind and battery storage projects across Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Madurai and Coimbatore. That's a fairly deliberate move too — powering an electric bus fleet with clean energy generated in the same state makes the whole "clean mobility" pitch a lot more credible than just swapping diesel buses for electric ones running on grid power of unknown origin.

"Our Rs 2,500 crore commitment is a statement of our confidence in Tamil Nadu and our desire to participate in its next phase of growth. With its strong industrial base, talent and renewable energy potential," said Ashok Hinduja, Chairman of Hinduja Group of Companies (India).

Why Tamil Nadu Keeps Getting This Kind of Investment

This initiative builds directly on an already sizeable footprint. Hinduja Group's automotive and mobility presence in Tamil Nadu includes commercial vehicle maker Ashok Leyland, electric bus manufacturer Switch Mobility and engineering services firm Hinduja Tech. It follows an earlier Rs 7,500 crore agreement signed in September 2025 for EV ecosystem investments, plus Ashok Leyland's own Rs 500 crore battery pack assembly plant currently under construction in Pillaipakkam.

Put together, that's a pretty consistent pattern of capital flowing into the same state, quarter after quarter, rather than a one-off announcement. For a company that already builds heavy trucks and tippers under the Ashok Leyland trucks banner, Tamil Nadu is clearly being treated as the group's home base for its bigger electrification push too, with battery assembly, charging infrastructure and even the renewable power feeding it all being built out in the same region.

It also fits a wider trend playing out across India's commercial vehicle industry right now, where manufacturers are increasingly investing not just in electric trucks and buses themselves, but in the entire supporting ecosystem around them — batteries, charging and clean power generation — because none of it works well in isolation.
