Electric Vehicles Are Important, But Removing Old Diesel Vehicles Could Help More
By Amit Jangra | Published Date : March 10, 2026
Old diesel vehicles cause major pollution in India. EVs help, but phasing out old trucks, mini trucks and cars can improve air quality faster.
This pollution problem in India did not start yesterday. For years, experts and policymakers have raised concerns about it again and again. Since the late 1980s people already knew that air quality was getting worse. By the 1990s some groups even approached the Supreme Court asking for action. But even today, many cities are still dealing with bad air.
Reports say that pollution is affecting daily life in a big way. According to the University of Chicago Air Quality Life Index (AQLI), an average Indian may lose about 3.5 years of life because of air pollution. This is a serious number. Pollution also affects health in other ways. Doctors often say it can increase risk of strokes, breathing problems and even cause health issues for newborn babies.
So the issue is not only environment. It is also about people’s health and quality of life.

Earlier this year in January, the Supreme Court raised the issue of Delhi-NCR pollution. The court said authorities must focus first on the sources that create the most pollution. In simple words, the biggest pollution sources must be targeted before anything else.
Transport pollution is also a big part of the problem. Cars, bikes and trucks release smoke that stays in the air for long time. Experts sometimes have different views on the numbers, but studies still show that vehicles add a lot to pollution in north India.
Because of this, better transport policies are needed across different airsheds. If the real problem vehicles are identified, the solution may become easier.
Old Diesel Vehicles Create Bigger Trouble
One study, the Aironomics 2025 report by Bharat Climate Forum and Dalberg, explains the transport pollution situation in Delhi. According to the report, nearly 80% of transport-related pollution comes from two-wheelers, three-wheelers and trucks.
Cars are said to contribute less than 10 percent. But there is another side of the story. A large number of vehicles running today are older models. Around 55% of vehicles on the road are from the time before BS-VI standards. These older vehicles are responsible for almost 96% of emissions from Vehicles.
Another issue is diesel vehicles. There are fewer of them compared to petrol Vehicles, but the pollution they produce is quite high. Diesel engines send more dirty particles into the air.
Because of this, old trucks and mini trucks become a major concern in polluted cities.
Electric Vehicles Are Growing
Electric vehicles are now seen more on Indian roads. Many companies are starting to sell electric trucks and electric mini trucks for deliveries. Since they don’t produce smoke from the exhaust, they can slowly help make air cleaner.
The government is also encouraging EV adoption through different policies. Slowly more people are considering electric vehicles for transport and delivery work.
But experts say EV growth alone may not fix the pollution problem quickly.
Removing Old Diesel Vehicles Could Make Faster Impact
Some studies and experts suggest that cleaning the roads of old vehicles will help air quality faster. Very old diesel vehicles create much more pollution compared to the new models.
If cities begin phasing out old trucks, old mini trucks and outdated diesel cars, the pollution level may drop faster. This step could work along with the growth of electric trucks and electric mini trucks.
Electric vehicles are important for the future, no doubt. But right now, dealing with old and highly polluting vehicles might be the practical step India needs to take.

Frequently Asked Questions on Commercial Vehicles
1: Why are old diesel vehicles harmful?
Ans: Old diesel cars, trucks and mini trucks emit more harmful particles than new vehicles, worsening air quality and health.
2: Can electric vehicles solve India’s pollution problem alone?
Ans: No, while EVs reduce exhaust emissions, removing old diesel vehicles is needed for faster air quality improvement.
3: Which vehicles contribute most to transport pollution?
Ans: Studies show two-wheelers, three-wheelers, trucks and older cars, especially diesel vehicles, contribute most to pollution in cities like Delhi.
4: How can cities reduce pollution quickly?
Ans: Phasing out old trucks, mini trucks and diesel cars, along with adopting electric vehicles, can rapidly reduce emissions and improve air quality.
