200 Electric Buses Added Under PM e-Bus Sewa Push

By Jony Shekhawat | Published Date : February 16, 2026

The rollout strengthens India’s clean mobility push as electric buses continue expanding across major cities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched 200 electric buses in Guwahati, marking a fresh push under the Centre’s PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme. The flag-off took place at a public function in Assam and the rollout is spread across three cities. Of the 200 buses, Guwahati has received the largest portion — 100 in total. Bhavnagar and Nagpur are set to get 50 buses each.

After adding these units, JBM Auto’s electric bus fleet operating on Indian roads has moved past the 3,200 mark.

These buses are 9-metre, low-floor AC units made for daily city movement. Nothing fancy for highways. They are built for regular urban routes. CCTV cameras are installed. Doors open and close automatically. There are small but useful features to help elderly passengers and people with disabilities get on and off more easily. The goal is fairly basic — make city rides more comfortable and reduce smoke and noise on the roads.

Charging stations and depot support systems are being set up locally so that operations don’t face delays once services begin.

Numbers the Company Is Highlighting

JBM Auto says its electric fleet has already covered over 300 million kilometres across India and carried more than one billion passengers so far. The company also claims that these 40-seater buses have helped avoid over one billion kilograms of carbon emissions.

It manufactures its vehicles at a large-scale facility with an annual production capacity of around 20,000 units.

Bigger Picture

The PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme aims to strengthen public transport in cities that either lack organised bus systems or still depend heavily on older diesel buses. Officials link such projects to India’s long-term net-zero goals for 2070.

For Guwahati especially, the addition of 100 new buses is being seen as a significant upgrade. The city has relied on ageing fleets for years, and the new buses are expected to start operations in phases once charging depots are fully ready. For commuters, the change may not feel dramatic overnight — but quieter engines and cleaner air are a start.
