E-Autos Soon for Police Patrol: Coimbatore City Embraces Sustainable Policing
In a progressive move towards sustainable policing, the Coimbatore city police are set to roll out battery-operated auto-rickshaws for patrolling, signalling a positive shift towards eco-friendly law enforcement. The recent endorsement by the state government, allowing the registration of battery-operated passenger vehicles, has paved the way for the deployment of two electric models donated by a private company.
The decision to utilise these eco-friendly patrol vehicles was confirmed after the Coimbatore city police commissioner personally inspected one of the battery-operated auto-rickshaws last Friday. Each vehicle can accommodate four police personnel, including the driver, enhancing the efficiency of patrolling operations.
However, the road to deploying these electric vehicles has been without challenges. The donated auto-rickshaws, stationed at the Police Recruit School (PRS) campus for the past seven months, faced hurdles in obtaining registration from the transport department. This delay was attributed to licensing issues related to battery-operated passenger vehicles and those running on methanol or ethanol fuel.
Sources revealed that despite a notification from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways exempting such vehicles from licensing requirements, Tamil Nadu initially refrained from allowing this exemption due to regulatory concerns and potential on-road issues. The recent state government order, however, has brought about a change in this stance, permitting the registration of battery-operated passenger vehicles, including the two auto-rickshaws donated for patrolling purposes.
Deputy Commissioner V Balakrishnan addressed the registration challenges, stating, "All issues regarding registration were cleared, and some design flaws in the vehicles were also fixed. Additionally, we purchased two more vehicles with additional features of handcuffs for the mobility of the accused and the public address system. The vehicles will be launched in a week."

The upcoming launch of these electric auto-rickshaws, including models like the Piaggio Ape E-City FX Auto Rickshaw and the JPS Arjun DLX E Auto Rickshaw, stands as a testament to Coimbatore's commitment to eco-friendly policing.
The Piaggio Ape E-City FX, a 3-wheeler auto, boasts a seating capacity of D+3 and a gross weight of 713 kg. Powered by an Electric Motor, it generates a maximum power output of 7.3 Horsepower and a peak torque of 29 Nm, ensuring efficient and reliable performance. With a top speed of 45 km/hr, this electric auto-rickshaw exemplifies both power and agility, making it an ideal choice for patrolling the city streets.
On the other hand, the JPS Arjun DLX E Auto, another electric 3-wheeler auto, offers a seating capacity of D+4 and a gross weight of 575 kg. Powered by a robust 1000W Electric Motor, it delivers a commendable power of 1.34 Horsepower, ensuring smooth and responsive operation. With a top speed of 25 km/hr, this model prioritizes safety and versatility, making it a practical choice for patrolling in various urban environments.
As the city gears up for this innovative initiative, two prominent electric models, the Piaggio Ape E-City FX and the JPS Arjun DLX E Auto, stand out as examples of sustainable solutions for patrolling. The introduction of battery-operated auto-rickshaws underscores the city's dedication to a more sustainable and eco-conscious future, setting an example for other cities to follow.
