Zonal System Begins for Electric 3-Wheeler Operations in Jammu

Jammu starts zonal system for electric 3-wheelers

Now in Jammu, all electric 3-wheelers will work under a zonal system. Passenger and cargo 3-wheelers can only run in their own zone, and they must have color-coded plates to show their area. This rule aims to improve traffic discipline and ensure safe, organized urban transport.

Electric 3-wheeler use is growing fast across India, and now the Jammu district in Jammu & Kashmir has introduced a zonal system to control their operation. Under this rule, every electric 3-wheeler — including e-rickshaw, auto, and cargo models — can run only inside its assigned zone. The aim is to ensure smooth traffic flow and safer transport for all.

Color-Coded Plates for Zone Identification

According to Jammu Traffic Police, every 3-wheeler must have a color-coded plate at the front and back. The color will show which zone the vehicle belongs to. Senior Superintendent of Traffic Police, Farooq Qaiser, said that cross-zone movement will not be allowed. Any 3-wheeler found running without a proper color code will be seized and fined. This new system applies to both passenger 3-wheelers and cargo 3-wheelers.

Why the Zonal System Was Introduced

In the past one and a half years, Jammu has seen a big jump in the number of electric 3-wheelers — from around 70,000 to almost 80,000. Because of this sudden increase, the city roads started getting more crowded and traffic jams became common.

Dr. Rakesh Minhas, Deputy Commissioner, said that they will focus on public safety and traffic rules with priority. He said that we also expect effective EV 3-wheeler management with this step.

Rules Under the New Zonal Plan

The new system bans electric 3-wheelers from running on flyovers, national highways, and state highways. For safe movement inside the city, seven crossing points have been marked for zone-to-zone transit. Also, electric 3-wheelers registered outside the Jammu district are not allowed to enter the city limits. The regulation is strict but meant for organized operations of passenger 3-wheelers and cargo 3-wheelers.

Mixed Reaction from Drivers and Passengers

While the zonal system focuses on safety and smoother traffic, some electric 3-wheeler drivers and passengers called it inconvenient. Drivers say restricted zones may reduce their income and flexibility, while passengers fear confusion about where to catch their rides. However, authorities believe that over time, this system will bring better order and cleaner mobility for all.

Step Toward Safe and Green Transport

Even with challenges, this move is a step forward for cleaner and smarter city transport. Electric 3-wheelers are now a big part of India’s local mobility system. With the zonal system in place, the Jammu government wants to make city roads safer and cut down on traffic jams, while also encouraging cleaner, eco-friendly transport. Passenger and cargo 3-wheelers are expected to keep playing an important role in shaping India’s electric mobility in the future.

Ans. No, cross-zone movement is not allowed. Each electric 3-wheeler must stay in its allotted area, or else it may be fined or seized.
