Diesel and CNG price hikes usually just feel like bad news for transporters. Tata Motors is now pointing to them as one reason its electric small commercial vehicles are suddenly a lot more attractive. Electric vehicle penetration in the SCV and pickup segment has reached close to 10%, the company said, with further growth expected as the year progresses.

Girish Wagh, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors, told analysts on the company's Q1 FY27 media call that EV penetration in SCV pickups had reached close to 10%, and that rising diesel and CNG prices had pulled total cost of ownership parity earlier into an electric vehicle's operating life. In plain terms, buyers are now recovering the higher upfront cost of an EV faster than before, simply because the fuel they'd otherwise be paying for has gotten more expensive. Wagh said this shift has made electric vehicles noticeably more attractive to buyers who were previously on the fence.

Demand Is Spreading Beyond The Big Cities

What's notable is where this demand is now coming from. Tata commercial vehicles were increasingly being sold in Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns, a shift the company credits to its expanding charging network. Early EV adoption in commercial vehicles was heavily concentrated in large metros with better charging infrastructure, so this spread into smaller towns is a meaningful signal that the underlying charging ecosystem is genuinely catching up rather than just growing in a handful of cities.

A Growing Order Book Across Freight And Buses

The company reported orders for more than 3,400 electric commercial vehicles during the June quarter, spanning freight, logistics and passenger mobility. Separately, it holds an electric bus order book of around 850 to 900 units from government and private customers, including deliveries for Chennai, Ahmedabad, Odisha and Hyderabad. Tata Motors has already begun deliveries and expects to fulfil most of that order book across the second and third quarters, with some spilling into the fourth. Its wider electric bus business appears to be scaling in step with the growth on the pickup and SCV side.

Battery Cell Shortages Are Still A Real Constraint

Growing demand hasn't come without friction. Tata Motors said it's currently facing shortages of certain imported materials, particularly battery cells, which require longer procurement lead times than the rest of the supply chain. The company said it has taken steps to improve component availability and expects the bottlenecks to ease gradually, with Wagh specifically pointing to the end of the second quarter as when the broader EV trucks  should start getting optimizing. Tata Motors also noted that its electric commercial vehicle range, stretching from the Ace Pro to a 55-tonne tractor, has been engineered domestically and meets India's value-addition requirements.
