Tata Motors has a well-admired position in the commercial vehicle industry of India. Recently, Tata Motors decided to introduce hydrogen trucks in India. It is a big step for clean transport. Heavy trucks on long routes make a lot of pollution. Hydrogen trucks can help reduce this and support India’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2070.

The hydrogen truck trial was flagged off by Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi. Tata Motors Executive Director Girish Wagh was also present at the event.

These trucks will not run only for testing on paper. They will be used like normal commercial trucks under real working conditions. This will help check how they perform, how reliable they are and whether they are suitable for daily use.

Project Under Green Hydrogen Mission

Tata Motors got this project under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is funding the trial. The aim is to see if hydrogen Tata trucks can be used for regular logistics work and long-haul transport in India.

The trial will also help understand what kind of refuelling and support system is needed for hydrogen trucks in the future.

Test and Trial Time

The testing will continue for up to 24 months. During this period, 16 hydrogen-powered trucks will be used. These trucks will come with different body types and load capacities. Both Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine trucks and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle models are part of the trial.

The trucks will run on major freight routes around Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar. Some of the trucks are designed similarly to 12-wheeler trucks used for heavy cargo movement.

What the Ministers Said

Nitin Gadkari said hydrogen can become an important fuel for trucks in the future. He said it can help reduce emissions and also cut fuel imports. He added that such trials are needed to move toward cleaner transport.

Pralhad Joshi said green hydrogen can slowly help India move toward a zero-carbon path. He said starting hydrogen truck testing is a positive step and appreciated Tata Motors for taking this initiative in the country.

Tata Motors’ Focus on Clean Trucks

Girish Wagh said Tata Motors is working toward cleaner and smarter transport solutions. He said the company is proud to lead hydrogen truck testing in India.

The trial includes Tata Prima H.55S and Tata Prima H.28 hydrogen trucks. These trucks offer a driving range of around 300 to 500 km. They also come with modern cabins and safety features for better driver comfort.

Along with hydrogen trucks, Tata Motors is also developing electric trucks and other clean fuel technologies to support the future of Indian trucking.
