Rekha Gupta Asks Dealers to Push EV Adoption in Delhi

Delhi government signals a gradual shift towards compulsory EV adoption, urging dealers to guide buyers as electric commercial vehicles gain importance in future mobility.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta recently spoke at a conference organised by Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) in Delhi. In the event, she directly told automobile dealers that they should start motivating customers to shift towards electric vehicles.
She said dealers have a big role because they are the ones who talk to customers daily. If they explain properly, people can slowly move to cleaner options like electric trucks and other EV vehicles. Right now many people still confused about EVs, so guidance is needed.

During her speech, Rekha Gupta also gave hint that government is planning to make EV adoption stronger in coming years. She said that currently policies are based on incentives, but slowly things may become compulsory.
She clearly mentioned that there is a time frame in which Delhi wants to reduce pollution. By around 2027 or 2028, rules may become strict. This means people may not have full choice like today.
At present, government is giving benefits like subsidies, tax waivers and registration fee exemption. These steps are helping in early stage. Demand for electric buses is also slowly increasing with these efforts.
Dealers Asked to Take More Responsibility
Rekha Gupta said dealers should not just focus on selling vehicles, but also guide customers in better way. She told them to actively push people towards EVs instead of waiting.
According to her, thousands of people use vehicles daily, so even small change can make big difference. Dealers can influence buyers easily because customers trust them.
Segments like electric 3-wheelers are already growing in cities, and if dealers support more, growth can become faster. Government also said it is ready to work with dealers to improve business conditions.
Charging Infrastructure Still a Concern
One important issue discussed was charging infrastructure. Rekha Gupta said that current plans are not enough for future demand. When a suggestion of 150 charging stations came, she questioned it and said this number will not be sufficient. Delhi needs more charging points if EV adoption has to increase properly.
People still hesitate to buy EVs because of charging problems. This issue needs to be solved fast, otherwise growth may slow down. This is important for bigger vehicles also like trucks.
Future Challenges and Ongoing Plans
CM also talked about future problems, especially battery waste. She said that in coming time there can be a big issue of battery disposal. If not managed properly, it can create another problem.
Government is working on EV waste processing systems to handle this. Along with this, investment in public transport is also increasing. Around ₹10,000 crore is planned for metro expansion, and 1,000 new permits will be given to women for running electric autos free of cost.
Overall, message was simple but clear. Delhi is moving towards EVs, maybe slowly but direction is fixed. Dealers now have to play bigger role, otherwise transition will not be easy.
