NHAI Orders FASTag Issuer Banks to Validate Vehicle Registration Numbers

By Jony Shekhawat | Published Date : April 16, 2026

NHAI directs banks to fix FASTag data mismatches to prevent revenue loss and ensure smooth rollout of digital tolling systems.

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has asked all FASTag-issuing banks to urgently verify Vehicle Registration Numbers (VRNs) linked with FASTags. This step came after many complaints where FASTag data did not match the actual number plates on vehicles.

This issue is not small, because wrong data can create problems in toll collection system. If number is not matching, then tracking vehicle becomes difficult and system not works properly.

According to NHAI, such mismatches can lead to revenue loss for government. Some truck owners may misuse this gap and avoid paying correct toll charges. This also weakens enforcement, as penalties cannot be properly issued if vehicle identity is wrong.

There is also risk of legal action under Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 if incorrect details are found. So situation is serious and needs quick correction.

Old FASTags Behind the Problem

One major reason for these mismatches is older FASTags. Earlier, FASTag system was not fully connected with VAHAN database, so many entries were done manually. Because of that, errors and wrong data got stored in system.

Now with digital systems improving, such mistakes are getting noticed more. NHAI believes a big part of incorrect records is from that earlier phase only.

Banks Told to Blacklist Wrong FASTags

NHAI has clearly told banks to take strict action. Any FASTag found with wrong or invalid VRN must be blacklisted immediately. Banks have been asked to treat this work as urgent and not delay it.

This step may create some inconvenience for users at first, but it is important for fixing system. If data becomes correct, toll operations will become more smooth in long run.

MLFF Rollout Makes This More Important

This directive is also linked to upcoming Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll system. Under this system, toll will be collected without stopping buses, fully based on digital identification.

So if vehicle data is wrong, whole system can face issues. Enforcement actions like sending e-challans will depend completely on correct FASTag and vehicle details. Overall, NHAI is trying to clean the system before moving to next level. If banks and users cooperate properly, then this change can improve transparency and reduce misuse in toll collection system.
