New Lucknow Plant To Produce Electric Buses And Strengthen Ashok Leyland Trucks

Ashok Leyland strengthens its footprint in commercial vehicles with focus on trucks, buses and mini trucks across India.


Ashok Leyland inaugurated its new EV commercial vehicle plant in Lucknow on January 9, 2026. The plant is situated near Lucknow Airport at Sarojini Nagar Industrial Area. With this plant, Ashok Leyland has entered Uttar Pradesh’s clean mobility space.

The plant was inaugurated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Defence Minister and Lucknow MP Rajnath Singh and Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy were also present. Many state officials, industry people, dealers and suppliers attended the event.

The new plant is spread over 70 acres. It has been set up mainly for electric vehicle production. At present, the plant can make around 2,500 vehicles in a year. This capacity will be increased to 5,000 units in stages.

The main focus will be on electric buses used for schools and inter-city travel. The facility will also support Ashok Leyland’s wider product plans, including Ashok Leyland trucks and Ashok Leyland mini trucks in the coming time.

Modern And Sustainable Manufacturing Setup

According to the company, this is Ashok Leyland’s most advanced manufacturing plant till date. The facility uses rooftop solar panels, LED lights, battery-operated internal movement systems and zero water discharge processes. The plant is designed to maintain a positive water balance.

Chairman Speaks On Long-Term Plans

Dheeraj Hinduja (Chairman of Ashok Leyland) announced this new plant as an important step towards a clean environment in Uttar Pradesh. The chairman said the Hinduja Group is trying to develop itself along with local employment as this plant will provide jobs to locals. According to him, this plant will also help Ashok Leyland move closer to its long-term plan of reducing emissions.

CEO Highlights Technology And Quality

Shenu Agarwal, MD and CEO of Ashok Leyland, said Uttar Pradesh’s focus on green development made it the right choice for this facility. He said the plant has modern technology and high automation levels. He added that electric buses from this unit will help build cleaner transport solutions for the country.

Government Support And EV Market Growth

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the MoU for the project was signed in September 2023. Land was allotted in January 2024. The plant was completed within 18 months, showing quick approvals by the state government.

He said Uttar Pradesh had a 19 percent share in India’s electric vehicle market in 2024. At present, around 700 electric buses are operating in the state under government schemes.

Jobs, Training And Future Outlook

The Chief Minister said the electric bus made at this plant is a 17–18 seater vehicle priced at around ₹15 lakh. It is meant for school transport and short inter-city routes. He also said the Hinduja Group will train 10,000 youth every year at the facility.

With this new plant, Ashok Leyland is strengthening its future plans across Ashok Leyland buses, Ashok Leyland trucks and models like the Ashok Leyland Dost mini truck, while moving slowly towards cleaner mobility.
