Montra Empowering Light EV Lineup With SCV
By | Published Date : November 18, 2025
Montra is preparing to enter the 3.5–7.5T LCV truck segment after the new SCV launch.
Montra Electric is a part of the Chennai-based Murugappa Group, is planning to expand its small commercial vehicles. The company will launch a new sub-3.5-tonne electric truck next year. The new product will target customers who want a lighter electric mini truck or pickup for daily logistics needs.
According to the company, the upcoming model will share the same platform as the Eviator but will come with a lower tonnage and more focused applications. Multiple battery and body configurations are also expected.

Montra Electric believes that the sub-3.5-tonne SCV segment is the “sweet spot” for electric mobility in India. This category already has strong demand from last-mile delivery, e-commerce, and urban movement of goods. These operations usually involve short and fixed routes, moderate loads, and high daily running conditions that make electric trucks more economical.
The Indian SCV market is currently the largest within the goods carrier space. In FY25, SCVs in the 2–3.5 tonne category sold 310,696 units, nearly one-third of the total goods carrier market. Vehicles below 2 tonnes added another 155,927 units, showing the rising demand for mini trucks and pickups across cities and small towns.
EV Penetration Still Low but Set to Grow Fast
Even though the SCV segment is large, the adoption of electric trucks and electric mini trucks is still at an early stage. Today, EV penetration in this category is only around 1%. However, Montra expects this number to rise quickly as more models enter the market.
The company estimates that EV penetration in this segment could touch 5% next year and may reach 20% by 2030.
Plan to Enter the LCV Category Next Year
Along with the new SCV, Montra Electric is also studying the 3.5–7.5-tonne LCV truck segment. If the market potential looks strong, Montra plans to launch its first electric LCV next year. The company says it wants to understand customer needs around range, payload, and charging before finalising the product.
Better ride comfort, bigger load space, and higher energy efficiency are areas customers still worry about in electric SCVs and LCVs. Montra sees these gaps as opportunities to offer improved and more reliable models.
Expanding Touchpoints and Customer Network
Montra Electric currently sells its SCV products through 20 sales and service touchpoints across India. This number will grow to 25 by the end of the financial year. For now, the company’s focus is on reaching more use cases, building customer trust, and placing vehicles with large fleet buyers. From next year onward, the goal will shift toward volume growth.
Bigger EV Portfolio and Future Ambitions
The new launches are part of a broader strategy to build a full electric commercial vehicle lineup. This includes heavy trucks, mid-size CVs, SCVs, mini trucks, three-wheelers, and even electric tractors. Montra aims to reach $1 billion in revenue by 2030, with a major share coming from its heavy truck business.
SCV and LCV manufacturing happen at its 50,000-unit plant in Ponneri, Tamil Nadu. The heavy truck division operates under IPLTech Electric from Manesar, Haryana, where it recently launched the Rhino 5538 EV tractor-trailer.
