Mahindra has traditionally been strong in larger pickups, especially vehicles used to move agricultural produce. But the compact, fully forward-control segment — where Tata Intra mini trucks and the Tata Ace have dominated for years — had remained a comparatively weak spot in Mahindra's own lineup. The Veero platform was built specifically to close this gap.

"We saw fragmentation of the market and several sub-segments emerging," said Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO of the Automotive Division at Mahindra & Mahindra. "Volumetric cargo started growing, including pharmaceuticals and FMCG. Quick commerce and intra-city logistics were also becoming important."

The Veero is built on Mahindra's Urban Prosper Platform (UPP), first introduced with the original Veero in September 2024. Since then, Mahindra has sold close to 42,000 units of the Veero and the platform has notably helped the company gain ground in South India, a region where it previously had a limited presence. According to Gollagunta, Mahindra's share of the small pickup market now stands at around 49%, up six to seven percentage points from the year before.

How It Stacks Up Against Tata Intra Mini Trucks and Dost

The Veero's closest rivals are the Tata Intra V20 Gold Bi-Fuel and the Ashok Leyland Dost Twin Fuel — both direct competitors in the sub-two-tonne mini trucks category.

The Tata Intra V20 Gold carries a 1,200kg payload with a 2,690mm cargo body, meaning it can technically haul 100kg more than the Veero, though its deck is 210mm shorter. Tata claims a combined driving range of more than 800km for this model. Mahindra's pitch here is straightforward — the longer deck suits businesses moving light but bulky cargo, where volume matters more than outright weight capacity.

Ashok Leyland's Dost Twin Fuel undercuts the Veero on price, starting at ₹8.20 lakh — around ₹5,000 cheaper than the base Veero — while offering a 1,218kg payload and a claimed 400km range. The bigger Dost+ XL Twin Fuel costs ₹8.75 lakh and carries 1,410kg, giving it a meaningful payload edge over the Veero V4 despite costing ₹20,000 more.

At the lower end, the Tata Ace CNG 2.0 (800kg payload) and Maruti Suzuki Super Carry CNG (630kg payload, priced between ₹6.06 lakh and ₹6.14 lakh) sit as indirect rivals rather than direct competition, since they operate in a lower payload and price bracket altogether.

Engine, Mileage And Cargo Deck Details

The Veero 1.1 XXL CNG runs on a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine producing 48.5kW (about 66hp) and 98Nm of torque. Mahindra claims an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 21.4km per kg on CNG, with a combined petrol and CNG range of over 450km. Its 5.1-metre turning radius is meant to make manoeuvring in tight city streets and loading bays easier.

The combination of a 1.1-tonne payload and a 9.5-foot deck is designed for operators carrying cartons, packages and pallets that take up considerable space without necessarily maxing out the vehicle's weight limit — a common situation in FMCG and e-commerce delivery work.

Where The Rest Of The Veero Range Is Headed

Interestingly, when Mahindra first launched the Veero, it expected the top variant to make up 20-25% of sales. That figure has now crossed 40%, reflecting how much buyers in this segment now expect safety and comfort features like a driver airbag, reversing camera, touchscreen, power windows and air conditioning — something Mahindra didn't originally anticipate for a cost-sensitive category.

"We are realising that drivers are insisting on some of these things," Gollagunta said. "AC is another one. We thought AC would not have much acceptance, but now it is becoming something everybody wants in the vehicle." Still, he was clear that total cost of ownership remains the real deciding factor for buyers in this space: "If the math doesn't work, they are not going to buy the vehicle. It is a very cost-sensitive segment and word of mouth is more important than anything else."

Alongside the new CNG variant, Mahindra has also upgraded its Veero diesel range, now priced between ₹8.29 lakh and ₹9.45 lakh, from September 8. This version adds a 26.03cm touchscreen with Android Auto, multi-language voice commands, cruise control and remote AC operation through Mahindra's iMAXX connected platform, which covers over 50 features including vehicle tracking, geofencing, route planning and fuel monitoring.

On the manufacturing side, Mahindra currently runs monthly capacity of 3,000-3,500 units for the Veero platform, with room to scale up to 5,000 units if demand picks up. An electric version also remains on the roadmap, though Gollagunta said the company is waiting until the total cost of ownership economics make sense for a wide enough base of operators before bringing it to market.
