Mahindra & Mahindra announced on Thursday that its electric three-wheeler unit, Mahindra Last Mile Mobility Ltd (MLMML), has crossed unicorn status after raising about Rs 322 crore in a funding round led by global investment firm Lightrock. The round values the company at Rs 10,822 crore, or roughly $1.24 billion and comes ahead of a planned IPO that's likely for the second half of FY2027.

Lightrock led this round, but it wasn't the only investor writing a cheque. Existing backers including the International Finance Corporation and the India-Japan Fund — a fund managed by the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Ltd — also took part. That kind of repeat participation from existing investors is usually a decent signal, since it suggests the people already inside the business are still confident enough to add more money rather than sit this round out.

How Mahindra Got Here

The numbers behind this unicorn tag are genuinely impressive. Mahindra said its last-mile mobility business has seen a six-fold jump in electric three-wheeler sales over the past four years and volumes were up 85% year-on-year in just the first quarter of FY27. During FY26, it became the first electric commercial vehicle maker in India to cross cumulative sales of 100,000 electric three-wheelers. Right now, the company holds around 40% of the L5 electric 3 wheelers market — a segment that covers the bigger, more powerful autos used for both passenger and cargo work.

What's really striking is how fast the overall market has moved. Electric 3 wheelers as a category have gone from just 12% penetration to 40% in only two years, according to Mahindra. That's a huge shift for any vehicle segment in such a short window and it's exactly the kind of growth curve that tends to attract this level of investor interest.

What the Leadership Is Saying

Group CEO and Managing Director Anish Shah welcomed Lightrock as a partner, calling it a "pivotal milestone" for the last-mile mobility initiative. He added that with Lightrock now alongside IFC and IJF, MLMML has achieved unicorn status in the EV market and that this investment brings the company closer to its target of putting 1 million EVs on Indian roads by 2031.

Rajesh Jejurikar, executive director and CEO of the Auto and Farm Sector at Mahindra & Mahindra, pointed to the company's roughly 40% share of the L5 segment and said Mahindra has now been India's No.1 electric commercial vehicle manufacturer for four years running.

Why This Matters for India's 3-Wheeler Market

Mahindra's L5 three-wheelers serve two very different jobs and it's worth separating them out. On one side, there are passenger autos used for daily commuting in cities and on the other, there are loading autos used for short-haul cargo and last-mile delivery work. Mahindra's dominance across both segments is a big part of why investors are backing this business so heavily right now — it's not betting on one narrow use case, but on the entire electric last-mile ecosystem.

This funding round is also a strong signal for where the broader Mahindra 3 wheelers business is headed. With an IPO already on the horizon and this kind of investor backing lined up ahead of it, Mahindra looks set to keep pushing hard on electric three-wheelers as one of its most important growth bets over the next few years.
