Commercial vehicle sales in cities led the growth, but rural areas are catching up with increasing demand and improving market conditions.

Good news for India’s commercial vehicle market! The sales in August 2025 increased by 8.55% compared to August 2024. Now, the overall sales have increased from 69,600 to over 75,500 vehicles. That said, sales were slightly down from July by around 1%, since some buyers held off waiting for new tax rules.

Big trucks, the ones used for carrying heavy goods, saw sales rise nearly 6%. This is likely because more construction projects are happening and roads are getting better across the country.

Light Commercial Vehicles Are in Demand

Mini trucks and smaller commercial vehicles remain popular, with sales up just over 8%. Online shopping and businesses needing to deliver to smaller towns and villages are driving this demand.

Medium-Sized Vehicles See Biggest Boost

Medium commercial vehicles, like buses and mid-sized trucks, grew the fastest—over 21%! More schools and companies are buying buses for staff and student transport, plus there’s more trade happening between regions.

Electric Vehicles Slowly Gaining Ground

When we look at fuel types, diesel-powered commercial vehicles still dominate the market with an 81% share. CNG and LPG vehicles make up about 12.5%, petrol vehicles 4.3%, and electric vehicles just over 2%. Though electric trucks and electric buses are still a small part of the market, their numbers are growing steadily as more people become aware of their benefits.

Urban Sales Surge, Rural Demand Rises

In cities, commercial vehicle sales grew by 11.6% compared to last year, while rural areas saw a growth of 5.4%. However, sales dropped slightly in both areas when compared to July 2025. Experts expect sales to bounce back soon, with festivals coming up and better money flow in rural areas thanks to good monsoon rains.

What Experts Say About September

FADA President C.S. Vigneshwar said that August’s growth was good, but some buyers delayed purchases due to uncertainty about the new GST 2.0 tax rules. He added that better weather, more contracts from online businesses, and festival demand should help sales in September.

India’s economy is also supporting the vehicle market. Inflation is low, and GDP growth is steady. The new GST rules coming on 22nd September are expected to lower prices for buyers and boost sales even more.
