India Brings New Overloading Rules on Highways from April 15

By Jony Shekhawat | Published Date : April 15, 2026

New highway rules from April 15 bring strict overloading charges, FASTag-only payments, and digital tracking for truck, bus, mini truck, pickup and electric truck drivers.

India government has updated the overloading rules for vehicles running on national highways. This new rule started from 15 April 2026 and it will affect all truck, bus, mini truck, pickup and electric truck running on highways.

The main reason behind this change is to control overloading and protect roads from damage. Earlier many vehicles were carrying extra load which was creating problems on highways.

Now government has made a clear system for charging overloading fee. This time it is divided in different levels.

  • Up to 10% extra load → no extra fee
  • More than 10% and up to 40% → 2 times charge
  • More than 40% load → 4 times charge

This means if any Tata truck, Mahindra truck or Ashok Leyland truck is carrying too much load, then they will have to pay big penalty. This system is more clear now, so transporters can understand easily what they have to pay.

FASTag Payment is Now Compulsory

Another big change is that all overloading fee will be collected only through FASTag. Cash payment is not allowed now. Government is pushing digital system on highways. This will help in better tracking and reduce chances of cheating. If any vehicle comes without FASTag, then it will be handled under existing rules and may face penalty.

Digital Reporting Through VAHAN Platform

Now all overloaded vehicles details will be recorded in VAHAN system. This is a central database of vehicles.

Because of this:

  • Every overloaded truck will be tracked
  • Repeated violations can be noticed easily
  • Monitoring will become stronger

It does not matter if it is Volvo truck, Force trucks or Tata mini truck, all will come under this system.

Weighing System Made More Transparent

Overloading will be checked using certified weighing machines installed at toll plazas. One important point is:

If there is no weighing machine at a toll plaza, then no overloading fee will be charged there. This makes the system fair because charges will be based only on proper measurement, not guess work.

Impact on Transport Industry

This new rule will surely impact transport sector. In starting, drivers and owners may face some problems because they have to adjust with new system. Carrying extra load will now become costly.

But there are also benefits:

  • Roads will get less damage
  • Safety on highways may improve
  • Vehicles may run more efficiently

So overall, it can be good for long term.

Conclusion

The new overloading rules are strict but needed. Overloaded truck, pickups, and electric truck were causing damage to roads and increasing accident risk. Now with clear charges, digital payment and proper checking, system will become better. Slowly transport industry will adjust with these changes.
