The company enters the new fiscal year off a strong quarter. Volumes rose 27.4% to 1,344 machines in Q1 FY27, with segment revenue up 39.2% to Rs 419.6 crore. July was stronger still, with volumes up 49.2% to 534 machines. The broader market Escorts Kubota addresses — covering pick-and-carry cranes, backhoe loaders, mini excavators and compactors — grew around 23% during the quarter, led by cranes at 46%.
Sanjeev Bajaj, chief officer of the construction equipment business division, discounted much of that headline growth on the Q1 FY27 earnings call. The year-ago quarter had been disrupted by the BS-V changeover, when manufacturers were pushing costlier machines into a market still wary of the new technology. Stripped of that unusually soft base, he put sustainable crane growth closer to 20%.
What's Actually Driving Demand
Bajaj argued that what's left once the base effect is stripped out is a genuine recovery in project execution. "The last financial year, the rate at which roads were constructed was almost half of what it was in the year 2024 and 2025," he said, pointing to a renewed government push behind infrastructure projects. He specifically flagged development activity in Andhra Pradesh following its new capital city, a pickup in West Bengal, and traction in solar power and metro rail projects. Corporate buyers, he added, are increasingly opting for higher-capacity cranes where execution speed matters most to project timelines.

Escorts Kubota gained about 2.7 percentage points of segment market share last year and intends to stay aggressive through FY27, according to Bajaj. Backhoe loaders and compactors — the two construction equipment lines still to move to BS-V — arrive from September and will be repriced at that point, with models aimed at specific applications and entry-level buyers following from October.
BS-V Transition And Pricing Pressure
Emission-linked price increases have come through in two bands so far. Machines moving straight from BS-III to BS-V carried a 6-7% price rise, while those moving from BS-IV to BS-V took a smaller 3.5-4.5% hit, with most of that passed on in January 2025. Commodity costs have since forced several smaller increases through the first half of this year — including the January revision, the cumulative rise now sits at around 5%, or closer to 6% once channel discount adjustments are factored in.
"There is a pushback from the customer to the tune of they are taking longer time to decide, and it is taking a deeper negotiation," Bajaj said, adding that he expects prices to settle during the second quarter, with demand itself acting as the leveller. Heavy monsoon rain was flagged as the other near-term risk — supportive for tractor demand, but a drag on construction activity more broadly.
A 12-15% growth guidance for FY27 looks credible on the back of a genuinely strong opening quarter, though the uneven split across equipment types — cranes and excavators well ahead of backhoe loaders and compactors — is worth watching as the BS-V repricing lands later this year. With customers already taking longer to decide amid cumulative price hikes, how smoothly that September-October transition goes will likely shape whether Escorts Kubota's full-year number lands closer to the top or bottom of its guided range.
