India Opens First Commercial Electric Truck Battery Swapping and Charging Station

India is moving fast toward electric mobility, and now another big step has come from Haryana. In Sonipat’s Gannaur area, the country’s first commercial electric truck battery swapping and charging station has opened. This new setup works the same as a petrol pump, where big trucks, mini trucks, pickups, buses, and other EVs can stop, swap, and go again in a few minutes.

The station was launched by Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. The project was made by the Energy in Motion company at Delhi International Cargo Terminal (DICT) in Panchi Gujran.

The new electric truck station is designed like a fuel pump but for green energy. Here, truck drivers can change a full battery in just 5–7 minutes, instead of waiting 2 hours for charging. This will save a lot of time for drivers and transport companies, making goods delivery and logistics work much faster. Now truck, mini truck, or pickup can just swap and continue the long route easily.

Less Pollution, Less Cost

During the launch, Nitin Gadkari said this is a big historic step for India. He said this system will help reduce both pollution and transport costs. India spends around ₹25 lakh crore every year on fuel imports. If we move toward electric trucks and buses, that money can go into India’s growth.

He also said electric trucks, bio-LNG, bio-CNG, and green hydrogen projects will make India diesel-free soon. This station will inspire more private companies to start a similar setup across highways.

Boost to Green Transport and PM E-Drive Plan

Minister Kumaraswamy said this project supports India’s Green Energy Mission 2047 and PM E-Drive Scheme, which focuses on building a strong EV charging and battery network. This new battery swapping tech will help build clean, safe, and smart transport for future India.

The ministers said more such stations will be coming in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu soon, so that long-route electric trucks and 3-wheelers can move easily between states.

Focus on Reducing Logistics Cost

The government's target is to bring India’s logistics cost below 9% by 2026. For that, they are working on connecting road, rail, and water routes for better movement. With fast swap and zero downtime, electric mini trucks can now run longer without waiting for hours at charging spots.

Also, farmers, industries, and transporters will benefit because lower fuel cost means more income and savings.

India on Road to Becoming an EV Nation

Gadkari said India will soon be known for electric and green roads. He mentioned parali-based road projects already successful — like the Nagpur–Jabalpur highway, made using crop waste, are stronger than normal roads. Such innovations with electric trucks, pickups, and buses show India’s move toward a sustainable transport future.
