The arbitration case began after Ashok Leyland supplied buses to DTC under contracts awarded through a government tender. The company later raised claims connected to these contracts and started arbitration proceedings in 2013.

In its stock exchange filing, Ashok Leyland said it had originally sought Rs 445 crore through arbitration. DTC, on the other hand, filed a counterclaim of Rs 136 crore against the company.

Tribunal Awards Rs 222.65 Crore Plus Interest

The majority award, dated July 6, 2026, granted part of Ashok Leyland's claim. The tribunal directed DTC to pay Rs 222.65 crore to the company. In addition to the award amount, the tribunal granted 10% annual interest covering the period before arbitration, the duration of the arbitration proceedings and the period from the award date until the payment is made. The tribunal also awarded Rs 2.96 crore towards legal costs.

DTC Counterclaim Rejected

One of the key outcomes of the ruling is that the tribunal rejected DTC's entire counterclaim. This means none of the claims made by the transport corporation against Ashok Leyland were accepted by the tribunal. The decision marks a significant development in a case that has remained under arbitration for more than a decade.

Company Reviewing Financial Impact

Ashok Leyland said it is currently reviewing the award and calculating the final amount receivable, including the applicable interest. The company is also evaluating its options regarding the remaining portion of its original claim that was not granted by the tribunal. It added that the overall financial impact of the award is still being assessed. Electric buses may be added further.

No Impact On Promoters Or Management

Ashok Leyland clarified that the arbitration matter does not involve any litigation against its promoters or key management personnel. The company also confirmed that the proceedings have not been settled outside the tribunal process.

Conclusion

The arbitral award is an important legal outcome for Ashok Leyland buses in its dispute with Delhi Transport Corporation. While the company did not receive the full amount it had claimed, the award of Rs 222.65 crore, along with interest and legal costs, represents a major decision in its favour.
