Ashok Leyland is in talks with Adani Group to supply 2,000 electric trucks, marking a major step in its shift to green commercial transport.
Ashok Leyland, one of India’s top commercial vehicle makers, is in talks with the Adani Group to supply around 2,000 electric trucks. This potential deal could be a big move in the company’s journey toward clean and green transport.
The discussions were confirmed by Shenu Agarwal, the Managing Director and CEO of Ashok Leyland. He said this agreement, if it happens, would be a major step in the company's plan to grow its electric vehicle (EV) business.

Right now, electric trucks are still way more expensive than the regular diesel ones — almost three times the price, actually. So, it makes sense that they’re mostly being used in places like mines or other heavy-duty jobs.
Even with all that, Agarwal says it’s not just about one type of truck. The future’s probably going to need a bit of everything. He mentioned that no one really knows how many electric trucks we’ll see by the time this decade wraps up — but what’s clear is that we can’t keep depending on diesel forever. New power options have to be explored.
Focus on Local Battery Production
Ashok Leyland also wants to make more electric vehicle parts in India. At the moment, about 65% of parts used in EVs are imported, while diesel trucks only rely on 2% imported content. Agarwal said this needs to change if India wants a strong and stable EV industry.
“How can we build a sustainable transport system if most parts come from outside?” he asked. “In today’s world, anything can happen — a ship may be delayed or new taxes may be added suddenly.”
To fix this, Ashok Leyland will invest Rs 5,000 crore over the next 10 years to make batteries in India. These batteries will be used both for electric trucks and for energy storage systems.
Long-Term Plans and Smart Investment
At the moment, Ashok Leyland’s teaming up with CALB, a battery maker from China. But they’re not planning to stick with that forever — by around 2027, they want to start putting together their own battery packs here in India.
Agarwal shared that the company is taking a careful approach. “You can go all in and risk losing money as technology changes fast. But we believe in moving step by step,” he said.
First, they will start making battery packs. Then, they plan to set up a research and development (R&D) centre to improve battery technology further.
Conclusion
Looks like Ashok Leyland might be working on a big deal with the Adani Group. That’s a pretty clear sign that their trucks are shifting toward cleaner tech. They’re not just betting on one thing either — with local battery production and different fuel options in play, it seems like they’re setting themselves up for whatever comes next in electric trucks.
