Road Becomes a Power Bank for Electric Trucks

The highway test in Indiana showed strong and better-than-expected results.

A big change has come in the electric vehicle world. Engineers from Purdue University in the USA, along with Cummins, have successfully tested a new technology. With this system, an electric semi-truck can charge its battery while driving on the road, without any wire.

This test shows how future roads can directly supply power to electric trucks.

The test happened near a highway in West Lafayette, Indiana. About 400 meters of the road was fitted with this new wireless charging setup. After the successful testing of this road technology, the results were impressive and met expectations.

Truck Charged While Running at High Speed

The electric semi-truck kept moving on the highway and still got charged. It did not stop anywhere. The truck can run at a speed of 104 kilometers per hour while power is coming in. The road will provide a power of 190 KWto the running trucks.

The running truck will get 190 kW of power from the road. There was no wire, no plug, nothing connected. The truck just drove over the road and the battery kept filling on its own.

How This Wireless Charging Technology Works

This system works like wireless phone charging, but on a much larger level.

  • Coils under the road: Special power-sending coils are installed below the road surface.
  • Receiver under the truck: Receiver coils are fixed under the truck frame.
  • Power transfer: When the truck drives over the road, power moves from road coils to mini truck coils and charges the battery.

The entire process happens automatically.

Big Benefits for Electric Trucks

This technology can solve many problems faced by electric trucks today.

  • No range tension: Drivers will not worry about the battery getting empty.
  • Smaller batteries: Trucks will need smaller batteries since charging happens on the road.
  • Lower cost: Smaller batteries mean cheaper electric trucks.
  • Less waiting time: No need to stop for long charging breaks.

Highways can become charging stations themselves.

Experts Reviews

John Kress, Chief Engineer at Cummins, announced that this new technology will help to support rapid charging of commercial transport, like trucks and buses. He shared that the test performed much better than what the team expected.

Purdue University and Cummins joined hands with AECOM and White Construction for this project. If this technology is used worldwide, electric trucks will no longer need long charging stops. The road itself will become a power bank.

Frequently Asked Questions on Commercial Vehicles

Q1. What type of vehicle was used in this wireless charging test?

Ans. The test was done using an electric semi-truck. In the future, this system can also work for electric truck fleets, buses, pickups, and even mini truck models used for delivery.

Q2. Can this road charging system support heavy commercial vehicles?

Ans. Yes, the system delivered 190 kW of power, which is strong enough for heavy trucks, electric buses, and long-haul electric truck operations.

Q3. Will this technology reduce charging stops for trucks?

Ans. Yes, trucks can charge while moving, so drivers will not need to stop for long charging breaks. This is useful for electric truck and bus routes on highways.

Q4. Can this wireless charging work for smaller vehicles too?

Ans. In the future, this technology can also be used for mini truck, pickup vehicles, and other electric commercial vehicles, making daily transport easier and cheaper.
