Meghalaya Govt to Mandate Display of Driver Details in Commercial Vehicles

By Amit Jangra | Published Date : July 18, 2025

Meghalaya will soon require all commercial vehicles to display driver details to improve passenger safety and support tourism across the state.

The government of Meghalaya is set to bring in a new rule for all commercial vehicles, including electric trucks, mini trucks, pickup trucks, taxis and goods carriers. The goal is simple — to improve safety for passengers traveling across the state.

Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh shared the update this week. He said the decision comes as part of the government’s effort to make travel more secure for everyone — especially tourists and daily commuters.

"When people can see who’s driving them, they feel safer. It also keeps drivers responsible," he said.

Under the new rule, every commercial vehicle must clearly display the following driver details:

→ Name
→ Driving license number
→ Contact number
→ Home address

These must be placed in a visible spot inside the vehicle. It could be behind the driver’s seat, on the dashboard, or wherever passengers can easily see it.

This requirement will not apply to private cars or government-owned vehicles. It only targets those that have a commercial permit, as issued by the Transport Department or local District Transport Offices.

Why This Change Matters

Safety is the key reason. Minister Lyngdoh explained that making the driver’s identity visible helps reduce unwanted incidents. It makes it easier for passengers to report problems and creates a sense of accountability for drivers.

It’s not just about local transport either. With tourism on the rise in Meghalaya, the move also helps protect visitors using cabs, transport vans and light commercial vehicles.

Owners Have One Month to Comply

Once the rule is officially released, all commercial vehicle owners — including those operating trucks, pickup trucks, mini trucks and taxis — will have one month to put up the driver information inside their vehicles.

"It’s a small step, but it can prevent bigger problems," Lyngdoh said.

Better for Passengers and Honest Drivers

While the main goal is passenger safety, the rule is also good for trustworthy drivers. With clear identification, passengers know they’re riding with a verified person. And drivers with good records won’t have anything to worry about.

Transport System Getting Smarter

This move lines up with broader efforts to improve the public transport system and bring more order to the digital trucking and commercial vehicle space. As freight services, cargo vans and digital logistics platforms continue to grow, new rules like this help everyone stay safe and informed.

Final Word

Whether it’s a short ride in a shared cab or moving goods using a light truck, this simple rule helps protect people. The government hopes this will be one of many steps toward a smarter and safer transport network across Meghalaya.
