Maruti Suzuki’s Rail Dispatches Hit All-Time High in 2025

By Jony Shekhawat | Published Date : February 10, 2026

The automaker’s growing focus on rail transport helped reduce emissions while setting a new vehicle dispatch record in 2025

Maruti Suzuki India Limited reached a major logistics milestone in 2025 by sending more than 5.85 lakh vehicles through the railway network, the highest it has ever achieved in a year. This marked an 18% increase over last year, largely due to the company’s growing focus on rail transport. The shift is not only about higher volumes, but also about moving vehicles in a cleaner and more efficient way. It’s about cleaner movement and less stress on Indian roads.

By moving vehicles on trains instead of trucks, Maruti Suzuki managed to cut nearly 87,904 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions in one year. Fuel savings were also massive, crossing 68.7 million litres. Fewer trucks on highways meant smoother traffic and lower logistics pressure.

This shift also helps in moving Maruti Suzuki commercial vehicles more efficiently across long distances without adding to road congestion.

From Small Start to Major Share

Rail logistics was once a small part of Maruti Suzuki’s operations. In 2016, only 5% of vehicle dispatches were sent by train. Fast forward to 2025 and rail now handles around one-fourth of total outbound volume.

Actual dispatch numbers tell the story better. Rail volumes have grown from about 77,000 units in 2016 to today’s record level. This growth has supported faster reach for products like Maruti Suzuki mini trucks, especially in far-off markets.

Two Big Firsts in 2025

According to Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi, 2025 stood out for two reasons. One, Maruti Suzuki opened India’s largest in-plant railway siding at its Manesar facility. Two, the company successfully sent vehicles by rail to the Kashmir valley for the first time, using the Chenab River rail bridge.

Both moves showed how rail logistics is no longer limited to easy routes.

Bigger Targets Ahead

Maruti Suzuki now plans to take rail dispatch share up to 35% by FY 2030–31. This supports India’s long-term net-zero goal for 2070. The company has been serious about rail for years, becoming the first automaker to get an AFTO license back in 2013.

Since 2014–15, more than 28 lakh vehicles have been moved from 22 locations to over 600 cities. Even high-demand models like the Maruti Suzuki Super Carry are now regularly moved through this network.

Rail Is Now Core, Not Optional

Today, Maruti Suzuki runs 45+ flexi deck rakes, each carrying roughly 260 vehicles per trip. In 2025, over half of rail dispatches came directly from the Gujarat and Manesar plants.

This rail focus fits into the company’s larger Circular Mobility plan, which looks at cutting emissions across the full vehicle lifecycle, not just during production.
