India Takes Major Step Towards Ethanol Mobility With New Regulations

By Jony Shekhawat | Published Date : June 15, 2026

The latest approval for 100% ethanol fuel could encourage automakers to explore alternative fuel technologies, while India continues to expand its focus on cleaner and more sustainable transportation solutions.

The government is trying to get people to use fuels and they have made some progress. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that they have finished making the rules for using 100% ethanol fuel. Nitin Gadkari was speaking at an event in Nagpur. He told everyone that he signed the papers for these rules on June 9.

Now that this is done it is legal to use ethanol as a fuel for transport which is something the government has been trying to do for a long time. According to Nitin Gadkari they are no longer just talking about this they are actually going to start doing it. The government and companies are going to work to make this happen and alternative fuels, like ethanol, are going to become a big part of the plan.

Gadkari said the announcement comes after the launch of a 100% ethanol-compatible version of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR. He also indicated that several other companies are not far behind.

Manufacturers including Toyota, Suzuki, MG and Hyundai are expected to introduce vehicles capable of running entirely on ethanol in the coming weeks. Though exact launch timelines may differ from one company to another, the industry appears ready to take the next step. People associated with the automobile sector say that companies have been waiting for regulatory clarity before making large-scale plans. Now that the approval has been granted, more announcements could follow.

Government Looking Beyond Petrol and Diesel

India has been adding ethanol to petrol for a few years now. This new thing is like a step in what India was already doing. The government of India thinks that using ethanol will help India not have to buy as much fuel from other countries. India wants to use ethanol in petrol to reduce the amount of fuel India buys from other places. Since ethanol can be produced domestically, officials often describe it as a fuel that supports both energy security and local production.

The discussion is not limited to passenger vehicles either. Many stakeholders in the commercial vehicles segment are also paying attention to alternative fuel developments as operating costs and emission norms continue to evolve.

Hydrogen Project Also Announced

Apart from ethanol, Gadkari also spoke about a new hydrogen mobility project planned for Nagpur. Under the pilot initiative, a hydrogen refuelling station will be set up and two hydrogen-powered buses will be introduced for public transportation. The buses are expected to operate on green hydrogen produced through electrolysis. The project is intended to test how hydrogen technology performs in regular transport operations. Officials believe such trials are important before larger deployments are considered.

India Is Exploring Multiple Mobility Solutions

What is interesting is that India is not relying on a single technology to shape the future of transportation. On one side, electric three-wheelers keep growing in cities and towns. At the time more and more logistics and delivery companies want electric mini trucks. Many businesses are now putting money into trucks because they need cleaner ways to move goods around.

Now ethanol is getting a stronger push as well. The government's message seems clear: different technologies will have a role to play in the years ahead. With regulations for 100% ethanol fuel now approved and manufacturers preparing new products, the next few months could be important for India's alternative fuel journey. Whether it is ethanol, hydrogen or electric mobility, the focus remains on creating cleaner and more sustainable transport options for the future.
