BKT is expanding its carbon black business with focus on EV battery materials, speciality products andfuture growth in automotive and industrial sectors.

BKT Industries is now trying to grow beyond its traditional tyre business. The company is focusing strongly on its carbon black division and wants to build it as a separate high-growth business. Earlier, most carbon black produced by the company was mainly used for its own tyre manufacturing work. But now things are changing slowly.

The company is putting more attention on speciality carbon black products which offer better margins and require advanced technology. BKT believes future demand will come more from specialised industries rather than normal commodity products.

One important area where BKT is now working is EV battery materials. The company is looking at specialised carbon black used inside batteries to improve performance and conductivity. This move is helping BKT enter sectors connected with electronics and energy storage, not only tyre manufacturing.

Company officials said performance blacks and speciality blacks are more technology-driven and financially stronger businesses. According to Satish Sharma from BKT, the company wants to increase focus on these specialised products because they give better margins and long-term opportunities.

Big Capacity Expansion Underway

BKT is also expanding production capacity in a big way. The company has already completed one expansion phase which increased capacity to around 265,000 tonnes. Another phase is currently under commissioning and this will take total capacity close to 350,000 tonnes.

But the company’s bigger target is much larger. BKT has plans to eventually reach around 600,000 tonnes capacity in the coming years. This shows the company is preparing for future growth in speciality material demand across industries.

Third-Party Business Growing Fast

Earlier, most production was used internally, but now third-party sales are growing quickly. At present, around 60% of the carbon black business comes from outside customers. The company wants to increase this share to over 70% in the near future.

These speciality products are finding demand in many industries including plastics, paints, coatings and cables. Some automotive applications connected to trucks, buses, mini trucks and pickups also use these advanced materials in different forms.

Competition in Market Is Increasing

The company is not entering an empty market. Major players like PCBL Chemicals, Birla Carbon and Himadri are already active in the speciality carbon black segment. These companies have strong research capabilities and long experience in global markets.

Still, BKT believes its expansion strategy and technology focus can help it grow steadily in this competitive business environment.

Part of BKT’s Long-Term Vision

The carbon black business is now becoming an important part of BKT’s 2030 growth plans. The company aims to achieve total revenue of around ₹23,000 crore by that time and carbon black business is expected to contribute nearly 10% of total revenue.

To support this growth, BKT has also created a separate structure and leadership focus for the carbon business. The company wants this division to grow independently as a technology-focused supplier for future automotive and industrial products.
