Delhi Plans Comeback of Double-Decker Buses With New Routes and Updated Fares
By Amit Jangra | Published Date : December 08, 2025
Delhi is bringing back double-decker electric buses for tourists, covering famous sites like Bharat Mandapam, War Memorial and new Parliament, with scenic evening tours and affordable fares.
Double-decker buses were once a common sight on Delhi roads, back when DTC ran them as “Suvidha buses”. They slowly vanished around 1989 because the fleet had become old and difficult to maintain. Now, after more than three decades, the Delhi government is bringing the city’s old charm back and a new electric bus is almost ready to roll out again.

The new bus is an electric bus, made by Ashok Leyland under a CSR project. First, it was kept at the Okhla depot under the transport department, but later it was handed over to the tourism department for final planning.
Officials said the idea is to start the service from Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya and cover major tourist spots like Bharat Mandapam, National War Memorial, the new Parliament building, Dilli Haat and more. Evening tours are also being planned and the route is almost fixed. The officials are now only waiting for a time from the chief minister’s office for the flag-off ceremony.
Big Seating Capacity And New Travel Experience
The bus is big in size—around 9.8 meters long and 4.75 meters tall—and it can seat more than 63 passengers besides the driver. Because it will run mostly in Lutyens’ Delhi, there will be no problem with overhead wires or tree branches.
The bus will carry photos of major landmarks like India Gate, Signature Bridge and Bharat Mandapam. A guide will also be present inside the bus to explain the history and importance of each place to passengers, especially tourists.
Adults have to pay 500 rupees and children 300 rupees for the bus. The main idea is to let visitors enjoy Delhi in a calm, sightseeing style.
Tourism Circuit And Future Plans
In her budget speech, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta announced a new tourist circuit covering Kartavya Path, War Memorial, the PM Museum and the new Parliament. Earlier, the tourism department discussed bringing back the “hop-on hop-off” buses, but officials feel that Delhi traffic may not support that model like foreign cities do.
They also thought about special tours to markets and heritage sites, but it seemed people may not prefer bus rides to malls or busy markets.
