Ashok Leyland has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shriram Automall India Limited (SAMIL) to establish a certified pre-owned commercial vehicle ecosystem in India. The partnership will focus on expanding access to used commercial vehicles through SAMIL's auction and remarketing network, which is one of the largest in the country for pre-owned CVs.

The MoU was signed by Viplav Shah, Head – LCV, Ashok Leyland and Sameer Malhotra, Director and CEO, SAMIL. Under the agreement, the two companies will work together to facilitate the buying and selling of pre-owned commercial vehicles across the country, giving both sides access to a wider base of sellers, buyers and inspection infrastructure than either could build alone.
What the Partnership Actually Covers
The partnership will offer services including vehicle exchange, disposal and hybrid and special vehicle inspection. It is also expected to help Ashok Leyland expand its reach among fleet operators and single-truck owners in India, many of whom currently rely on informal, unorganised channels to sell or upgrade their vehicles — a segment that has historically lacked standardised inspection and pricing.
"We are delighted to partner with Shriram Automall to strengthen our presence in the pre-owned commercial vehicle market," said Viplav Shah, Head – LCV, Ashok Leyland. "By combining Ashok Leyland's deep expertise in the commercial vehicle industry with Shriram Automall's strong network and customer base in the used vehicle segment, we aim to create greater value and a seamless ownership experience for customers."
Why Ashok Leyland Is Betting on the Used CV Market
India's used commercial vehicle market has been growing steadily as fleet operators look for lower-cost ways to expand capacity and manufacturers have increasingly realised that owning a stake in the resale cycle helps protect brand value on the new-vehicle side too. A stronger, more organised resale channel makes it easier for owners of Ashok Leyland trucks to upgrade to newer models, since they know there's a credible, certified route to sell their existing vehicle rather than negotiating through informal dealers.
This also extends to smaller commercial vehicles. Owners of Ashok Leyland mini trucks — a segment the company has been expanding aggressively, including models like the DOST and SAATHI range — stand to benefit from the same certified exchange and inspection process, which has traditionally been harder to access for smaller commercial vehicle owners compared to those running larger fleets.
What This Means for Fleet Owners and Single-Truck Buyers
For buyers exploring the used market, a certified pre-owned ecosystem generally means more transparency around vehicle history, condition and pricing — factors that matter just as much when shopping for used pickups as they do for heavier trucks. It also gives single-truck owners, who often don't have the negotiating leverage of large fleet operators, access to the same auction and remarketing infrastructure that bigger players use.
If the partnership scales the way both companies are describing it, it could set a template that other commercial vehicle manufacturers in India follow, formalising a resale market that has largely operated on trust and local networks until now.
