ASDC Boosts Skills to Support India’s Last-Mile Workforce
By Amit Jangra | Published Date : April 24, 2026
ASDC is training drivers to reduce skill shortage in transport sector, helping people get better jobs and improving support for trucks and last-mile delivery services.
India’s transport sector is moving fast these days. You can see more trucks, mini trucks and even electric trucks on roads now. But still, one thing is not matching this growth — skilled drivers. Many drivers learn on the job, without proper training. It works somehow, but not always safe or stable. Because of this, companies also face issues again and again.
To improve this situation, Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC) started a training effort. In around five years, about 156 people completed it and moved into proper jobs. Yes, number is not very big, but still it shows something is changing slowly.

The training is mainly happening in Pune and Bangalore. These cities already have strong transport networks and regular demand for drivers.
ASDC is working with Institute of Driving and Traffic Research (IDTR) for this program. They provide trainers and setup, so the training becomes more structured.
Course duration is also not short. It goes around 330 to 360 hours, which means proper time is given to learn things.
Learning Is Not Only About Driving
Here, training is not just about driving vehicles. It goes a bit deeper.
People are taught basics like how vehicle works, small maintenance and how to handle issues on road. Safety training is also given, which is important in busy traffic.
Drivers also learn how to behave in job, especially while dealing with customers. This becomes useful in taxi services and delivery work.
Whether it is trucks, mini trucks or even electric mini trucks, this kind of training helps in real conditions.
Small Change, But Big Impact on Income
One interesting thing is income improvement. Before joining, many trainees were earning around ₹8,000 to ₹10,000 monthly.
After completing training and getting placed, income increased to around ₹15,000 to ₹22,000. Not a huge jump, but still makes daily life easier.
Also, they move from random work to more stable jobs, which gives some security.
Efforts Still Needed in Some Areas
Right now, women participation in this field is still very low. ASDC is trying to improve this slowly, but it will take time.
They also want better connection with companies, so trained drivers can get jobs faster without waiting too much.
With increase in electric trucks and new transport systems, demand for trained drivers will only go up.
Final Thoughts
This program is not perfect and it is still small in scale. But it is trying to solve a real issue.
India’s transport sector needs trained drivers for trucks, mini trucks, electric trucks and electric mini trucks. Without that, growth will face problems.
ASDC’s effort looks simple, but it is useful. Step by step, it can make a difference.
