New Stop-Start System by Volvo Aims to Cut Fuel Use in Commercial Trucks

By Amit Jangra | Published Date : September 03, 2025

Volvo Trucks launches a stop-start system to improve fuel efficiency and cut emissions, helping fleet operators save costs and support cleaner transport solutions.

Volvo Trucks has introduced a smart new feature in its heavy-duty trucks — a stop-start engine system that helps save fuel and cut emissions. This new function will be available in the Volvo FH and FH Aero models, both powered by the company’s 13-litre diesel engine.

While the idea sounds technical, the benefit is simple: less fuel used and fewer emissions released.

Here’s how it works in simple terms. The stop-start system keeps an eye on the road. If the truck is driving on a downhill slope and the speed is over 60 km/h, the system can automatically turn off the engine for a short time.

When the engine shuts off for a bit, the truck just coasts — no fuel gets burned at all. It might only be for a few seconds here and there, but over a full day of driving, that time adds up. And so do the savings.

Volvo says this feature could cut fuel use and emissions by around 1%, depending on the road and weather. That might not sound huge at first, but if you’ve got a fleet on the move every day, the difference is noticeable — especially at the pump.

Built on Trusted Volvo Truck Technologies

This new system is not something made from scratch. It builds on two well-known Volvo truck technologies: I-See and I-Roll.

→ I-See uses map and road data to predict slopes ahead.
→ I-Roll helps the truck roll smoothly to save energy.

Now, by adding stop-start to these features, Volvo has made their trucks even smarter when it comes to saving fuel.

Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, explained it well:

“Our engineers have done it again by creating a feature that makes transport more efficient. This is part of our larger decarbonization plan to make our engines better and cleaner.”

When Will It Be Available?

You won’t have to wait too long. Volvo has confirmed that this new stop-start system will be available from September 2025. It will come with orders for Volvo FH and FH Aero trucks that use the 13-litre diesel engine.

So, if you’re planning to update your fleet or buy new trucks, this is something to watch.

Part of a Bigger Green Plan

Volvo’s stop-start tech is only one part of a much bigger game plan. The company’s been moving quickly toward greener transport — and this update fits right in.
Combustion engines that run on renewable fuels

→ Battery-electric trucks
→ Fuel-cell electric trucks

Together, these steps show that Volvo Trucks is serious about lowering emissions and making cleaner transport a reality.

Final Words

Fuel costs keep rising. Emission rules are getting stricter. Every bit of savings helps. Volvo’s new system might seem small at first glance, but it could make a big difference in the long run — especially for companies running large fleets.

Volvo Trucks is clearly looking ahead. And for businesses that rely on trucks every day, that’s good news.
