India’s electric commercial vehicle segment is growing rapidly. Taking this momentum forward, Murugappa Group’s clean mobility arm Montra Electric HCV (IPL Tech) has opened a state-of-the-art electric heavy commercial vehicle (eHCV) plant in Manesar, Haryana.

Plant Capacity and Infrastructure

Spread across 255,000 sq. ft of land with a built-up area of 150,000 sq. ft, the new facility has an annual capacity of 6,000 electric trucks, which can be scaled up to 7,500 units with additional shifts.

India’s First All-Women Automated Battery Unit

One of the biggest highlights of the plant is India’s first all-women, fully automated battery production unit. Montra says this step reflects its commitment to gender inclusivity and women's empowerment in the manufacturing sector.

Advanced Technology and Industry 4.0 Practices

The new Manesar plant features 60% robotics integration and is built on Industry 4.0 digital manufacturing practices. It includes a 1.7 GWh battery pack assembly line, electrical and electronic labs, quality assurance labs, brake and wheel testing units, battery pack cyclers, and R&D facilities.

Focus on Local Components and Sustainability

Montra Electric confirmed that, except for battery cells, it will use up to 74% local components. The plant also integrates battery recycling programs, waste management systems, and on-site charging infrastructure and has future plans to adopt renewable energy.

Rhino EV Series and Future Roadmap

The facility will manufacture the company’s flagship Rhino EV truck series along with upcoming models. Montra also plans to leverage the PM E-Drive Scheme and state-level incentives to expand its reach in India’s electric truck market.

Murugappa Group’s Legacy

Montra Electric is part of the 125-year-old Murugappa Group, which has businesses across agriculture, engineering, and financial services. The group has a turnover of nearly Rs 902 billion and employs more than 94,000 people worldwide.
